We're all going to..DIE!

Scientists at the American Astronomical Society's 215th meeting, in Washington DC, said earlier this week that new observations of T Pyxidis in the constellation Pyxis (the compass) using the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite, indicate the white dwarf is part of a close binary system with a sun, and the pair are 3,260 light-years from Earth and much closer than the previous estimate of 6,000 light-years.

The white dwarf in the T Pyxidis system is a recurrent nova, which means it undergoes nova (thermonuclear) eruptions around every 20 years. The most recent known events were in 1967, 1944, 1920, 1902, and 1890. These explosions are nova rather than supernova events, and do not destroy the star, and have no effect on Earth. The astronomers do not know why the there has been a longer than usual interval since the last nova eruption. But they fear it might be a SUPERNOVA waiting to happen!!!

The story goes on to say that if it did go supernova, we would all die. Almost STAR TREK XI's Romulas fate, if you think about it.

That even at that distance, the radiation would wash over our world and destroy the ozone layer and kill all life. But, if it did happen, we wouldn't even know until we were dead since gamma radiation and light travel at the same speed...

Does my life insurance cover this?

Big deal, it would take 3,260 years to reach us, in that time not only will we have hopefully colonised new star systems via FTL travel we'll have the technological expertise to shield the Earth.

Just for the record, I hope it goes Supernova. The undeniable fact that Earth has 3,260 years left to survive would change the way this planet and society functions. It would certainly increase the funding for space agencies.

It could happen any momen..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

I finally realise my calling in life, I know what I'm here to do. Regardless of how long it takes me, I am going to design a method of protecting the Earth from this possible life threatening Supernova. Wish me luck my friends.

TO THE BATMOBILE!

But it may already have happened, say, 3258 years ago, and we wouldn't know anything about it. But in two years time, we would know about it, because that is when we would see and suffer it.

2 years eh, hmmmmmmmm, I suppose so. :alienblush:

I'll feel safer with Jadzias amazing math on this. ;)

Jadzia has the math for everything, tell us Jadzia, are we doooooooomed? ;)
Hmm, first comment from that blog ...

:p

Don't worry, I noticed that too and wondered if anyone might say something.

I don't know about cosmology, but I can make stuff up. Is that good enough? ;)

Jadzia's vision said:
There will be a brilliant light, and night will turn into day. A traveller will return, and raise his cloak over us, and none shall be harmed. It will be a miracle.

That's how I see things anyway. :bolian:

3000 l.y. away? Pftt. We may get free street lighting for a month or two. Let me know when a star 30 l.y. is going supernova!

We are all going to die some day...you could go to sleep tonight and not wake up...why worry???

Me too . Others can sit around singing 'whatever will be will be', and waiting for death to find them. But the stronger spirits among us, won't give up trying to survive so easily. :)

I was just bored. And unwell. I'll have a better response to this thread somewhere...

Basically, nothing lasts forever, but if we're going to survive, we'll do a good job of it. That is the "whatever" that "will be."

It is a neutral statement, I'll give you that. It is NOT, however, an admission of defeat.
