Went to see the movie with a friend...

Well, I accompanied a couple of friends to the 7:50 PM Star Trek show last night (Sunday May 17) and they both LOVED it. Not liked it... LOVED it... and neither of them are Trekkies. They just heard that the movie was really good (partially from yours truly ;)) and they asked me if I wanted to come with them. (They said it was kind of like going to Mecca with a Muslim.)

Oh and BTW, the theater was almost half-full last night... and we're in a suburban shopping center in the middle of nowhere. Star Trek definitely has some impressive nacelles--er, legs. :D

Some people may just not like the movie. That's their call. If they gave it a fair shot and didn't care for it, I'm not going to call them haters or tell them their wrong.

I loved it, even though I know I'll go back to the original crew more often that I do this movie.

Both times I've seen it, I heard teenage girls go on about how funny and cool the movie was, and how Chris Pine was hot.

Honestly, when you've got teenage girls thinking something is "cool" enough to enjoy, you've pretty much jumped your highest hurdle. Here's to hoping Star Trek will no longer be quite as "dorky" in the public eye as it has been for the past ten years. Geeky is OK; Star Wars is geeky, that's why it's "OK" for people to go see it. But once Trek went full-on dork there was no way the general public was coming for the ride.

My husband (a Wars fan) noted that this movie will be the 10-12 year olds' Star Wars.

I honestly don't see why someone who enjoyed the SW prequel films wouldn't enjoy this movie.
Well, if you like already knowing how the story will end, which characters will live and die, and what planets will still be around in the future, then "Star Trek XI" is probably not your cup of tea.

...Honestly, when you've got teenage girls thinking something is "cool" enough to enjoy, you've pretty much jumped your highest hurdle...
Although some people (not me) will point to this as the reason why they think Star Trek was a bad film. There are many elitist Trek fans out there who feel betrayed since Star Trek is no longer their "secret".

My response may be a little OT, because this is obviously not the case with the OP's friend.

...and he didn't like it!

He's not even an anti-science fiction person since he enjoys Star Wars, Star Gate, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly and so on..

However he thought the movie was full of plot holes, contrivances and coincidences and was not impressed at all!

I wasn't expecting this, and though I agree with pratically everything he said, since he enjoyed the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy I was expecting him to atleast be entertained...
I even thought he was going to grow an interest in Star Trek with this movie but alas, that was not meant to be!

Obviously, people having different tastes is something perfectly natural, this however was somewhat of a surprise.

Wait. He enjopyed the Star Wars prequel Trilogy; and yet finds THIS FILM full of plot holes??:lol::guffaw::lol::lol:

^^^^^
he just lost ALL credibility. Move along, nothing to see here.

who's stopping you?

My lack of free time, mainly.

If you added up the amount of "free" time you spent on this board complaining about the Kelvin's registry over the past few months, you could have watched the prequels and the original movies fifty times by now.:p

Yeah, but then I wouldn't be able to channel my life's problems through an irrational hatred of a misuse of the number zero.

Ummmm It entertained me for 2 hours. That's really all I asked for and I think I got it. It's MAKE BELIEVE!

I respectfully disagree and have to take the side of Praetorian's friend and say the Star Wars prequels were better. They are fun to watch. Damn it, I want to watch them now.

Of course the Prequels were better than JJ-Trek!

Well, Heaven's! Everyone knows that!

BTW, you do know what happened to the poor bastard who fucked up the Kelvin's Registry Number, don't you?

....just checking!

The Prequels Were Better....

Got any mitochondira?

 Okay, I have to admit, that was funny.

It boggles my mind how little of Star Trek that Star Trek fans actually enjoy.

What's that saying? "We hurt the ones we love the most." To that affect, we are extra critical. You can't tell me the true Star Wars zealots out there are whole heartedly gushy over everything Star Wars. No. Didn't think so.

Rather than complain about what we talk about why don't you offer a useful opinion or two!

Sorry, I just don't see much positivity around here. I'm not talking about blind love or gushing over the material, but seriously, it's not all bad. In fact, I love the new movie. It brought fun back to Star Trek films, something that's been sorely missing since at least "First Contact" and perhaps even since "The Undiscovered Country".

I give your friend credit for even going to see the movie. Not everyone is open minded like that. I believe the main thing about criticism is that it should be informed, not just close minded yapping. Some people just liked the SW prequels more (I know plenty of people who fall into that category). I don't make judgement on them, even though I disagree with them.

Well even though I was entertained watching it, you have to admit there were some pretty big contrivances and coincidences here and there. Doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the overall experience, it just means the story left a little to be desired.

Eventually the glitter will fall out of people's eyes and they'll wonder what they ever saw in it.

:guffaw: 3 movies of worthlessness events which could have been reduced to only ONE MOVIE and the lead character (who doesn't know how to act) goes evil after a 5 sec after a scientological pep talk... yeah RIGHT! ZOMG WTF FTW! LOLLERCAUST!!!

AND then YOU nitpick star trek.:evil::evil::evil::evil:

The movie was full of plot holes, contrivances and coincidences. That really is obvious, isn't it? It's really not that good a movie - Eventually the glitter will fall out of people's eyes and they'll wonder what they ever saw in it. Kind of like Titanic.

I don't think people ever came to their senses about Titanic...isn't it the biggest grossing film?
But I agree with you...the glitter is going to fall out of my eyes if they don't come up with a more thoughtful sequel. If they can do this...I'll be hooked all over again, if not then I'm bailing and the
"original 79 will do me just fine".

Well, you're right. I didn't mean to jump down your throat. I guess I'm just sick of new members on here that seem to be complaining about star trek fans as if they're not one of them. So...my apologies to you sir!

I also agree with you in that I think the new Star Trek movie brought some good fun, among other things, back to Star Trek films. I truly enjoyed the new Star Trek movie. Personally, I'm trying to get as many non-trek fans to go see it because I really believe they'll walk away having enjoyed the film. However, it's difficult to get past the stigma of what is "Star Trek" to people who don't typically get into SciFi. I'm working on them though ;)

The prequels? Ugh.

So did you ask them to beam you onboard?
