weird re-imagined action figures

Welcome to the latest in my series of action figure-related threads.

The companies that make adult collectables, like Diamond Select, McFarlane, Mezco and NECA always create action figures that look exactly like the movie characters. On the other hand, companies that still specialize in children's toys tend to be a bit more...creative.

In the 90s, Kenner released "Age 4+" action figures based on the Aliens and Predator franchise that deviated enormously from what we saw in the movies. The Aliens and Predators all had very bright colors, the Aliens were mutated to resemble various animals, such as rhinos, gorillas, snakes and spiders, and the Predators had bizarre-looking color schemes and weapons like tentacles coming out of their faces. The Marines weren't any better. They looked nothing like the characters in the movies. They had the wrong clothes, the wrong faces and the wrong cyborg enhancements. Some of the action figures came with short comics by Dark Horse, featuring these re-imagined characters in an attempt to justify these foul abominations. I don't know how they convinced Dark Horse to have anything to do with this.

More recently, Hasbro has been cross-breeding their Transformers toys with various other franchises like Animorphs, Star Wars and Marvel Super Heroes. The result: a Darth Vader robot that transforms into a Tie Fighter, a Luke Skywalker robot that transforms into an X-Wing and a Spider-Man robot that transforms into a motorbike.

What do you guys think about these severely altered action figures? Do you like them or hate them? Are there any others, besides the ones I've mentioned?

Basing children's toys on monsters from blood-drenched R-rated movies strikes me as a monumental case of missing the point. What's next, a plush Freddy Kruger doll?

Be afraid. Be very afraid. ;)

The Aliens line made a lot of sense to me. If you're going to try to expand the line, you need the "good versus evil" play pattern, and you need diversity in characters. Having aliens use various animals/creatures as their base was something spun off an idea from the films and the Marine's lack of proper likeness was most likely due to rights issues in using the likenesses of the actors involved.

As for Transformers, it makes sense to take two powerful lines and merge them together. Animorphs failed partly because the toys weren't all that great in humanoid mode and Animorphs wasn't quite the scifi powerhouse that Star wars is. The Star Wars Transformers are hit and miss. Some are downright bad while others are pure awesome. The Millennium Falcon is one of the best Star Wars toys in ages IMO.

When I think of "reimagining" I think more of lines like McFarlane's "Fairly Tales" (http://spawn.com/features/monsters4/) and "Monsters" (http://spawn.com/features/monsters/). I often like seeing reimaginings so long as they retain something that is core to the subject it is based on.

Okay, but that doesn't look like it's intended to be marketed toward children. More of a self-aware wink-wink thing for adult fans or collectors.

That one's a modern thing for adult fans.

These, OTOH.... Talking Freddy Kreuger doll, anyone?

I'm surprised that they actually made Alien toys already. That movie was R-rated back in 1979 I believe.
Here's a commercial:

Kenner almost made Star Wars style figures for the movie Alien back in 1979. Prototypes are out there for the googling.

As for the first post, no matter the property, it's just a property. Rights will be owned. Brands will be rebranded. Demographics marketed to. Money will be made. That's it.

Almost as bad: Shortly after Fellowship of The Ring was released, I was in a store and came across a plush doll of Gollum. One of the most hideous things I have ever seen. Looked more like a stuffed aborted fetus than something I'd hand a kid to cuddle with.

They also made a Darth Vader that turns into the Death Star, with three small Tie Fighters and a couple of Stormtroopers to put in it.

I bought it for my oldest nephew as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago.

The kids like 'em, so why worry about it?

Of course, I have one of those for myself, a Hulk that turns into a tank (the green one). My friend Rita got it for me as a birthday gift last year, which was fittin', for us, since I bought her comic books, and we both went to see The Incredible Hulk at a special event that past summer.

If anything, its a gateway for kids to get into science fiction. Where's the harm in that?

being a dino nut & a fan of the films I really loved the Jurassic Park toys & at one point after the 2nd film but before the third was released they(was it Kenner?) made these hideous neon repainted versions of some of their older dino figures as well as some new sculpts that crossed 2 different dinosaur species together. I forgot what the line was called but the storyline was that the JP scientist started splicing different dino DNA together to make these dino mutants...they look like they wakled out of a toxic landfill.

:guffaw:I never saw that! is there a picture of it anywhere? I have GOT to see how HIDEOUS this thing looked!

"Chaos Effect", it was a way to stretch out those sculpts even further. http://www.jptoys.com/toy-database/expanded-universe/chaos-effect/index.htm

A limited line of "new" JP toys is coming out as Toys R Us exclusives: http://www.jptoys.com/toy-database/expanded-universe/jurassic-park-2k9/index.htm
