Weekend Numbers - Trek #7 - $5.6 million - $232 million

Trek has never done well outside of English-speaking countries, other than Germany.

Yeah, it's a very American franchise.

Huh... well I have to admit, I'm a little surprised. I mean, yes, it's a TV/film franchise that is made in America, with Americans being the target audience, but I thought it had considerable popularity all around the world. I guess we can't believe everything Trekkies 2 tells us. ;)

I'm also a little surprised that the "too American" sentiment apparently doesn't extend to the Terminator and X-Men franchises, but of course, I'm no expert on the tastes of foreign film audiences.

Maybe because those are cynical movies where Americans look bad, whereas Star Trek makes it look like the Americans prospered.

don't take that too seriously, just talking out of my ass as they say....

The problem is also that Trek is tied into the TV series. And if you think getting non-Trekkie Americans to believe you can see the movie without having to watch the TV series first, imagine how much harder it is to convince the international audience whose TV stations have probably rarely shown the series.

If you compare the US/World ratios, the new film seems to have kept to the trend of the last ten movies. TMP and ST IV were the two previous movies that altered the balance, but the numbers for the rest are very consistent.

"Trekkies 2" covered international ST fandom, sure, and discovered that ST fans can be just as passionate wherever you go in the world. But very few countries experienced "The Next Generation" the same as the US. In most other places, TNG came out on sell-thru VHS, two episodes per tape, once a month. When it did come to TV, it was often in late-night timeslots - because the networks realised that avid fans had already rented the videos. Late-night screenings on TV eliminated the chance for many, many young people being exposed to TNG. That missing generation of young international fans is probably affecting the final ratios.

Thunderous applause...!

If that same percentage holds, 3.55 million this coming weekend, plus whatever M-Th brings, say, 2.45 million... for a domestic 238 million going into Tr2 week.

250 is gonna be tough.
