Wearing a Starfleet Uniform in public

Cmdr Sho

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
it has bee a long time since i have posted something like this or posted at all on here.

first off if anyone remembers about this time a year ago, i was asked to keep ppl up to date with my encounters regarding wearing my uniform in public.

over all i have gotten many positive things from it. some of then are little things like the vulcan salute and "beam me up, scotty" but the most important things of all is all the compliments that i have received from trek fans and non-trek fans alike. several ppl in one of my summer classes last summer requested that i wear the uniform after i had mentioned that i wear one. another instance was when i was walking out a grocery store with a couple of friends when a car stopped in the parking lot and a couple of nice looking females rolled down the window and said to me, "you look very sexy in that uniform." this of course shocked me to a point but felt very positive about this.:bolian:

other times at my connunity college i have had the opperitunity of meeting several trek fans that i would not have known if i had not wore my uniform. most of these ppl were female and one in perdictular got into star trek because of me. :)

now if there are still ppl out there that dont think that wearing the uniform is a good idea, then look at the fact that one of my new friends is now into star trek and is asking me alot of different questioons on the subject.

this is were i leave you for now or untill i get a response!!

trek on!!!:vulcan:

=/\=

as for pictures, i will have ppl take some. but i really have not thought of that.

as for when i wear my uniform, just whenever i feel like it, unless i get a request to. i already have plans for next labor day. i walk the bridge that connects the lower and upper peninsula of Michigan every labor day. so i am going to wear it then. i am also going to wear i for service projects of the Circle K group that i am a part of here. if i could find a cheep dress uniform i would wear it on special occasions...

like for an example- at the community college that i go to, we put on a play called Flight of the Lawnchair Man, well the stage director and the play director are both big Star Trek fans. well as you could imagaine what i did. opeing night i wore my uniform. and on the last day too. but the only thing is that at that point, i wished i had a dress uniform...

oh hey!!! i do have pictures of me in uniform with others when ST XI came out...

so here it is... one pict that you have requested... this was taken at the willow creek cinema 8 after the new star trek movie...

I like polo shirt guy's idea of having ordinary clothing emblazoned with the Starfleet insignia. I'm going to get one on my Y-fronts.

I went as Data to a Holloween party last month. I got a costume off the internet and threw on some clown makeup. Since I bear a resemblance to Brent Spiner (mostly a five-finger forehead and a pointy nose), some drunk guy at the party gave me $20 for winning his best costume award that he just made up.

I have never worn a costume in public (except for Halloween), but I find your thread interesting. Keep us up to date regarding your adventures.:bolian:

I've always wanted a II-VI movie era uniform, but have no idea where to get one.

Anyone know? I'd certainly post pics of myself in it in public, assumed I get home in one piece.

And gym shoes?

I used to wear my early TNG uniform all the time when I was like 12 when it was newer and still on TV. :)

Cmdr Sho, you are a brave man. More power to you or any other fan that wants to dress up in costume in public. Do what pleases you. It's something I personally could never do.

Be wary of people giving compliments that are disguised as insults though, especially pretty women/girls. To hell with them if they don't agree with what you want to do.

My fifth graders had a star party on Monday. A retired scientist came down with his telescopes, and the students and their families got to look at Jupiter and the moon. (Unfortunately, the automatic lights and certain weather conditions interfeared with viewing a few other astronomical bodies.)
I made it a point of wearing my First Contact-era uniform. The kids got a kick out of it, and a few parents came up to me and comented that they liked Star Trek. I'd tell them, "I could tell that you were smart."

I hate to be the one to say this, but they probably snickered as they drove away.

I still have a problem with people who wear the uniform in public. Fortunately for the OP, he's not one that decides to go to court in it.

For those who says sports fans do the same, please ask yourself when you saw a person go into a serious social situation wearing one or said, using the court woman as an example, "How could my crew respect me if I took off my uniform?"

But heck, you want to wear your uniform in public, power to you. It just means that others will have to be continued to be embarrassed to say we even like Star Trek.

I say more power to ya buddy. I don't care what people think of me if I say I'm a Star Trek fan. That's their small minded idea, not mine.

They used to be available through the Star Trek.COM store. If I recall correctly they were around $300 each.

This sort of thing can end up sensitive for some people, please don't take offense to this.. but this has always bothered me about fan uniforms:

Why is it that fan uniforms always look so much different than the actual costume uniforms used in the show?

In the picture listed above, the guy in the gold uniform is wearing pleated pants, for instance when that uniform should be a one piece set. The collar is also wrong on it.

The person in the early DS9/VOY era uniform has a similar problem in that the costume is not a one-piece, and doesn't have a zipper. (and I won't really mention the shoes)

Now, I'm not nitpicking or judging these uniforms or anything, I'm just curious about them. I've been to tons of conventions, and I can't recall ever seeing anyone who looked like they stepped right out of the show. I've seen uniforms of every Trek incarnation, and very few, if any of them match up.

And, you know, I get it that it's a fan thing and it's just for fun, but I've seen plenty of people do picture perfect Borg and Klingons, not to mention Stormtroopers, BSG pilots, SG-1 people, and even Ghostbusters who were absolutely spot-on replicas of the actual thing. I even saw an orion slave girl wearing Leia's Bikini once, wrap your brain around that!

So, what gives, costume fans? Are the starfleet uniforms really complicated and difficult to duplicate? Is it a matter of them being prohibitively expensive?

Just curious!

Not everyone's a professional seamstress/seamster(?) so they can't make it perfect, and others buy cheap mass-made versions...

Actually, you can tell by the collar that that is a season 3-7 TNG uniform which are NOT one piece uniforms...
