We need more anthologies!

My top 5 wanted Trek book list:

A Enterprise anthology- Ties up loose ends from the series (Temporal Cold War, follow-ups to episodes screaming for a sequel) and pushes forward with the post-TATV storyline.

Another TOS anthology- Some April and Pike stories, some second-five year mission stories, some post-second-five-year-mission-pre-TWOK stories, some Enterprise-A stories.

A Lost Era anthology- Excelsior, Enterprise-B, Enterprise-C, older TOS crew, Terok Nor, the possibilities are endless!

Another DS9 anthology- fills in the gap between The Soul Key and the Typhon Pact entry.

Another VOY anthology- post finale. Janeway/Tuvok stories, Neelix story, post-String Theory Kes story, Delta Quadrant stories, Captain Chakotay stories, Doctor/Seven stories, then post Full Circle stories.

I'd freak out if I got to read any one of these!

A better idea for a Temporal Cold War anthology -- Don't make it Enterprise specific. When you're dealing with a war in time, the battlefields can be anywhen. There could be stories that involve Flint in ancient Earth history, Gary Seven during the 1960s, Zefram Cochrane, and all the way onward to Nemesis and beyond. I'd want to explore the different fronts in the war. Maybe the actors wouldn't realize they were part of a larger drama. It could be quite interesting. And who do I have to pitch this idea to... :)

I so agree. The short story books are my favorite trek-reading. Any of those suggestions would make me happy as a tribble in a grain silo. I'd especially like to see either more DS9 stories (yes, I'm a niner!) or an Enterprise anthology.

I absolutely agree. I love the anthologies. Tales of the Dominion War and No Limits are two of my favorite Star Trek books.

Assuming we can tolerate the wait, I was sorta thinking these kinds of anthologies - like the DS9 and Voyager and Enterprise ones suggested - would be the kinds of things used for DS9 and Voyager's twentieth anniversary and Enterprise's tenth. Given the precedent of Prophecy and Change, Distant Shores, Sky's The Limit, and Constellations, it seems like a bit of a tradition at this point.

I'd go for most of those anthologies mentioned upthread. Although I would see the TCW concluded in a novels rather than short stories. Perhaps it could be the next crossover in a few years?

I would be the first in line to pick any of these anthologies up :techman:. Those are some fantastic ideas! I'm currently reading Tales of the Captain's Table and it makes me really want more anthologies. I've picked up all of the various ones from the last bunch of years, and the only one I have yet to crack open was last year's Mirror Universe one. Hopefully April 2010's Seven Deadly Sins anthology lives up to its legacy :).

I'd like anthologies more if they didn't always come in the TPB format. I find large books a lot more cumbersome to read.

^ in terms of anthologies, I think TPB is a better format, to include any of the recent Trek anthology in a mmpb format would mean a really thick book, or tiny fonts, neither of which is easy to read.

I like Trade's I prefer them over Mass Markets.

As for Anthologies, I wouldn't say no to a second Tales from the Dominion War Anthology or Tales of Destiny as even though there was a lot of varity in Destiny proper and the subsiquent fall out has been featured in the novels set after, theres a part of me that would like to read what happened throughout the Alpha and Beta Quadrants even more and possibly find out how the Borg came across those subspace portals.

^These. Yes!! These are great ideas. Especially enjoying the idea of shorts set during the Destiny events.

And regarding TPBs I also don't like them but think anthologies absolutely need to be TPB.

There are economic reasons why the trade format is better. Anthologies by their very nature sell okay. Not great, just okay. A trade paperback, because of its higher price point, can tolerate okay sales; the higher price point offsets the lower sales to some degree, making the anthology financially viable.

anthos are one instance where i tolerate the trade format. the other being the 'three-novels-in-one' thing of MyrU and MU books and the SCE reprints. i feel like i get my money's worth.

if it's just a fucking overgrown paperback novel, i feel gipped.

^Agreed. Anthologies and the "3-in-1"'s are perfect for trades. Single novels should be in MMPB form. This is what pissed me off about PAD's latest NF novel, Treason.

I always thought 3-in-1s were perfect for getting some old-school Trek novels in around the edges; I think it would've been awesome, when the Trek line was really pumping stuff out before Marco was laid off, to do a 3-in-1 of TOS 5ym stories, or a 3-in-1 of TNG stories during the show. Totally standalone, three stories with really different tones, to fill the gap left when essentially all the novels went into relaunches and post-finale ongoing arcs.

How about an off-shoot of sorts to the Myriad Worlds books covering the various never-produced Star Trek scripts that have been written over the years (for Phase II, for example).

Part of the reason why the anthology format is so appealing to me, is that since the novels started getting more infrequent/longer they have become more epic. They have to focus on the main storyline, and the small stuff gets overlooked in a way that it might not have during the era of lots of little 250 page books.

Or one about:

Rura Penthe, Galitep Labor Camp,Tantalus Colony, Suliban Detention Complex #26, Jeros II, New Zealand Penal Settlement, and others.

Nothing like a good prison story.

You ever notice that our boys and girls seem to get locked up a whole lot?

Now that's an anthology I would be interested in! I'm a sucker for a good prison story. Stalag 17, The Shawshank Redemption, The Great Escape, Escape from Alcatraz...hmmm...I'm sensing a theme here...:shifty:

I completely agree, one or two Anthologies a year would be nice, especially ENT finally deserves one (With the nice side effect, that we get a broader approach to ENT than just Mangels and Martins, which never really was my favourite).
And don't forget all those ebooks which never made it to a Dead-tree-reprint.
But, given the fact that PB just laid off two Editors and the remaining ones most likely will be completely overwhelmed by the amount of work, I doubt that were gonna see any Anthologies except those already confirmed, simply due to the high workload an Anthology creates.
