We need a new holiday

RoJoHen

Awesome
Admiral
With MLK Jr. Day coming up tomorrow, I got to thinking...

When was the last time we had a new federal holiday declared in this country?

AND...why the hell isn't the Super Bowl an official holiday yet Just think of how much more awesome Super Bowl parties would be if people didn't have to worry about waking up for work the next day!

My new job does not give us MLK day off, which is very disappointing. It should be required. We don't get President's Day, either. I'm not even sure when the next Holiday off is....

There was a suggestion a while back that Australia needed a new public holiday because we didn't have many holidats in the back half of the year. Some guys came out with the idea shown in the video below but the Australian government hasn't implimented it yet

Maybe America could do something similar to Canada?

I don't get MLK day off either, but that's because my company has lumped most of our holidays together so that we can all take off from just before Christmas to after New Year's. Unfortunately, this leaves us with a long time until the next holiday (Memorial Day).
Personally, I think Talk Like a Pirate Day should be a holiday, but on the other hand, I couldn't annoy my coworkers with pirate speak if it was!

Ah, the joys of being a federal employee. :D Though I think that we need something in April. February-May is a long stretch.

Let's see:

New Year's
MLK Day
President's Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Columbus Day
Veteran's Day
Thanksgiving
Christmas

Ten holidays, the last five of which are like a cascading bonanza. I know, as I am a Federal Contractor and reap the benefits.

Didn't they combine Washington's birthday and Lincoln's birthday into President's Day to make room for MLK Day? If we get another holiday, they might have to combine President's Day and MLK day into Famous Dead Dude's Day.

Brilliant! We'll have to invade them because Canadians are generally too polite to invade us. Besides, what a can o' worms they'd be opening! We can barely manage ourselves . . . we could make it easier if we eliminate tolls at the international bridge and points of entry.

That or we could have an Everybody donate your spare pocket change to the Poor day - national collection centers could be set up or you could take it to your local community kitchen to save time and beauracracy.

I've been saying for years that my birthday should be declared a national holiday. It is, after all, the most important thing that will ever happen in life. AND it would mean a day off from work for everybody.

With pay.

What do you guys think?

Well, what should it be? Will Obama eventually get a holiday for being the first black President? Will the first woman President get her own holiday?

Really, when was the last time the President declared a new national holiday?

Not sure, but I think it was when Wilson created Mother's Day.

We have 10 public holidays, mandatory to be given to all employees (unless you pay hefty overtime). You can borrow one if you want.

New Year's Day
Easter/Easter Monday
Labour Day
Ascension
Pentecost/Pentecost Monday
pseudo-Independence day (not the day Belgium became independent, but the day our first king took his oath to serve the Constitution)
Assumption of Mary
All Saints
Armistice Day
Christmas

There are some extra days for civil servants and associated staff, but as I am not one, I don't care about those.

Taking my usual role as feeder of useless Italian facts, I'll submit we have a mixed bag of Catholic and National holidays:

Jan 1 - New Year's Day (usually devoted to drunken debaucheries)
Jan 6 - Epiphany (Three Kings' Day)
Late March/April - Easter Monday (Angel's Day)
Apr 25 - Liberation Day (end of WWII)
May 1 - Labour Day (the real one :p)
Jun 2 - Republic Day (establishment of the Italian Republic)
Aug 25 - Assumption Day (aka Ferragosto)
Nov 1 - All Saints (well, duh)
Dec 8 - Immaculate Conception (aka Make Your Christmas Tree Day)
Dec 25 - Christmas (go to Mass if you are not drunk)
Dec 26 - Saint Stephen's Day (aka Leftover's Day)

Plus, every city has its own Patron Saint's Day (for example, Milan has Saint Ambrose's Day, Dec 7).

Longest hiatuses (hiati?) are Epiphany-Easter (Ash Wednesday unfortunately is not a holiday) and Ferragosto-All Saints, which really sucks.
