Explain the part where that's NOT offensive?

Oh come on. Haven't you ever used that term??

Why, yes. I have. I have had to use it in such sentences as, "My son was born mentally retarded."

And yes, how the OP and some other people here use it IS offensive. It is highly offensive.

When used as callously and flippantly as it has in this thread, it's as derogatory as the N-word or an anti-semetic slur.

Perhaps when you are older, wiser, or just plain more mature and learn to care about others who simply cannot defend themselves in this "great" society, then you will understand.

But far be it for me to expect enlightenment on a Star Trek board...

That would be interesting. Pay ten bucks to watch the trailer, then out the door.

Actually, I don't think that's interesting.
I think it's ...well, retarded.

Maybe they're sneaking into another movie. One they may have actually wanted to see, but wasn't showing the Trek teaser. Inspired thinking, really. :p

Now usually the kids behind the counter ( and I do mean kids..like 15-16 years old) have two operating speeds: slow and reverse.

Tonight they worked at one speed: retarded.

This is great...screw anyone who can't stop taking themselves too damned seriously for two seconds to find this funny.

And to get technical, the word "retarded" perfectly applies to your description of the service you received here:

Retarded

To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede.

v. intr.
To be delayed.

Great thread. Sorry you didn't get to see the trailer. I'll be seeing Cloverfield tonight, and hopefully, I won't have the same experience...

\S/

It's odd that the orginal meaning of the word is lost on people of this day and age, but then again because it's been pinned to people with mental problems that the word itself has become un-PC in this day and age.

* It's sad really that some words have become something you can't say because people forgot thier ORGINAL meanings and feel they need to censor you for no real reason at all *

Okay, guys....and everyone else involved in this little thread detour.

How 'bout we let this part of the discussion drop? It can lead to nowhere good, and is really superfluous to the original topic.

Thanks. :)

This all worries me slightly. I do want to see Cloverfield, but I've never been a fan of shakey-cam on the big screen, so I'm mainly going for the teaser... I don't want to miss the teaser :(

I wonder whether they'll show the teaser here in Germany. I'm going to see Cloverfield regardless, since my bf is eager to see it. Me, I'm going because of the teaser, but heck, if they don't show it, it won't make me cry.

I'll just be a little disappointed.

I'm still hoping they'll show it, though!

Oh come on. Haven't you ever used that term?? Please...

This "offensive" crap will be the downfall of society.
I definitely don't want to live in a world where people are forbidden, by law or rule, to say or do things that offend other people. That's IMPOSSIBLE to achieve without... well, without killing off everyone who disagrees with the "official 'right-thinking' position." Which has been tried in the past, is currently being done in some countries, and will definitely be tried again in the future.

On the other hand... it IS offensive, and if I were to say something that was offensive to, oh gee, let's say "Number Six," I'm SURE that he'd be the first person to challenge ME on it. Am I mistaken?

SO... should anyone be prohibited from saying stupid, obnoxious, offensive things? NO.

Should people be mocked and abused for OBJECTING to something stupid, obnoxious, and offensive? NO.

I think you're getting so carried away with the FIRST part of that, that you're forgetting the second part.

The use of the word "retarded" is no better, or worse, than the use of the word "nigger" or "spic" or "wop" or "dago" or any other EPITHET.

It's offensive and it reflects badly on the person saying it.

THERE... now, that said... I know why he said it and, given the circumstances, I might have felt very much the same way. I'd probably have just referred to the girl behind the counter as a brain-dead moron. Which says exactly the same thing he was saying but ONLY insults HER. ;)

Wow, this is why I wait till big movies are on the verge of being booted to the cheapo theaters before I see em.

Where the heck is Revere, so that I can avoid the water there?

^ No. I would be sorry about how un-PC my thread is if I actually gave a shit about your apparently ultra-fragile sensibilities.

PC?

There are actually people who are called "retarded" as a slur. You know, in reality. Insulting people, who actually may read this BBS, and then claiming you're being prosecuted by some imaginary "PC Police" doesn't make you a hero... it makes you a fucking asshole.

Grow the fuck up asshole.

Buddy, relax. It's a retard joke. And not even a very funny one. That's the real crime here.

But, on topic, I have never experienced such a nightmare trying to see a movie or have dinner. In fact, I did both yesterday for my birthday and it all went really smoothly. Sorry to hear your night kinda sucked. But seriously, Cloverfield (which we went to see) was amazing! The shaky cam stuff doesn't really bother me for some reason so it didn't take long to get into the visual head space the movie wants you in.

I think I read that the Teaser will be on the new movie website early next week. Hopefully that means the Apple Trailers page will get it.

If my computer cooperates, it will be great. But it doesn't always do that.

On topic: it's strange how, when we really want and plan something, strange things start happening when we finally get to the day we were so eagerly awaiting. It's like when you try to show something you can do to someone and it goes awfully wrong.

*sigh*

Yes, the teaser rocked.

Cloverfield was annoying thanks to the camerawork but overall entertaining.

And regarding the use of the term "retarded", I defer to The Savage Curtain (paraphrased):

"Lincoln": In my century that term (negress) is used as a description of property...

Uhura: But why would I be offended, sir? You see in our century, we have learned not to fear words.

Thought it might be appropriate here.

The crime is some people here just don't get it.

Hey, try this on for size:

"It's a (put in derogatory/ethnic slur that fits you) joke."

Hate is hate. And you just propagate it, :censored: .

I agree with you, Loyd_Dobler, so much for an evolved culture...

But (to get back on topic), if you go watch movies in Revere, I guess one shouldn't expect much from you to begin with...

So, let me get this straight...

number6 went on a date, boned some retarded girl, and then posted a thread about it on a Star Trek website.

Did I miss anything?

Well, just that he's started shaving.

Having boned a girl, he's required to turn in his "Official Star Trek Fan Club" card within 90 days.
