We are pregnant!

Mila Kunis recently said

"Hello, I'm Mila Kunis, with a very special message for all you soon-to-be fathers," the star of Disney's Oz the Great and Powerful said. "Stop saying, 'We're pregnant.' You're not pregnant! Do you have to squeeze a watermelon-sized person out of your lady-hole?

I have no opinion of Mila Kunis as a person, but I find that I am agreeing with her statement. I find men saying "we are pregnant" annoying. why can't these men just say "we are expecting"?

How do other TBBSers feel about this?

Meh, never bothered me. It's just a figure of speech.

Though I did just go back home for a couple days saw an old friend. I asked him what was new, and the first thing he said was, "Well, I impregnated my wife...."

I have never used that terminology myself, even though I have six children so I've had plenty of opportunity to do so. However, I don't have a problem with it. It shows that they're in it together. They started the process together and they're both happy about it and committed to it. It's a positive statement and a reflection of how the relationship between the two prospective parents should be. Kunis' statement just sounds to me like someone with a very negative attitude toward the whole thing.

Now, if the man starts saying things like, "Our cervix is fully effaced!" that might get a little weird.

It just doesn't sound right to me.

Does a man use it for any other medical condition his wife might have? i.e we had a heart attack, we had a nose job, we have piles?

I am not sure if Australian men say it, they might, but it also could be a mainly American phrase. Maybe our British, Australian, Canadian etc members can tell us they have heard the phrase used.

I feel like couples that are expecting a kid can do a lot of annoying things and this is just one of them, not specifically more annoying than the rest. Doesn't bother me in particular.

I did it with ours kids. Didn't even think about it, it wasn't a cutesy thing, it was just a normal conversational filler. IRC, I only ran into a handful of people that got in a twitch about it, half as many that decided to "speak up for my wife" and tell me off. All of them got greeted with an eyeroll and me carrying on the conversation.

Thing is you are not pregnant if you are the man. You are having a baby and if you say "we're having a baby!" it's not going to make people roll their eyes.

Meh, as I said: didn't think about it. Just one of those things, not like it's worth losing sleep over. That's why I just rolled my eyes and kept on talking whenever someone got twitchy over it. Least I was more polite that the Mrs, who told a woman to shut up and mind her own business when the woman started into a spiel about it.

To me, whatever works for the couple is what matters. If a spouse's wife doesn't mind "we are pregnant," then it's really no one else's concern.
