Ways in Which The Other Treks Were Better

.

Imagine of instead of Neelix, Voyager had to take the delta quadrant version of Garak on board for the ride. Epic story lines ensue.

Interesting. I think a version of Neelix who was simultaneously devious and untrustworthy while also being 100% essental as a guide to the Delta Quadrant would have been great.

On a semi related note: they really should have kept Seska around longer.

Some old thoughts on Neelix

I dislike the character.

Ned Ryerson's personality
+
Othello's jealousy
+
Dog the Bounty Hunter's hair
+
The fashion sense of a local children's party clown

=

Neelix

And to make matters worse, his character was completely pointless. A bad cook on a ship with replicators. A morale officer who annoyed every one he came into contact with. A guide with knowledge of only a small section of the journey. A love interest for a two year old. Do you really want a character with all of these traits to act as the ship's ambassador?

About 95 percent of the character's screen time it to provide comic relief, but he just isn't funny. So those scenes are just pointless filler where the other characters silently stifle their frustration as he blathers on. "Mr Vulcan! Mr Vulcan!"

Even on the rare occasions when he is supposed to be taken seriously, his makeup (mangy humanoid nutria) combined with his 3 piece clown suit attire make it almost impossible to do so.

Having said all that, I think Ethan Phullips is talented, and did the best he could with an impossible character.

Actually, if they had embraced more tension in the show, such as keeping Seska on board despite it being known that she had been a Cardassian spy, then Neelix may not have been so out of place. What made him stand out most of the time was that his eagerness and neediness didn't look very conventionally Starfleet.

As a person who has alwsys felt DS9 was the best STAR TREK series, I had to think really about this.

There is one thing that DS9 did lack... a sense of wonder and amazement by the lead characters. But I think that is a result of years of STAR TREK being back. TNG sort of lost the sense of wonder by season 3. ENTERPRISE, for all its faults, did bring a lot of that back.
By the time of DS9 humans had been living in space away from Earth for 2 centuries, with Enterprise the adventure was just beginning.

I really liked how in Voyager adversaries came to work together (marquis and starfleet) or became part of the crew (7of9)

We got a hint of that in DS9 with a Vorta and those jem'hadar that went AWOL, but I would have liked to have seen more.

When Worf was taking part in those gladiatorial fights in the Dominion prison, I would have liked to have seen a bunch of jem'hadar develop a man crush for Worf. They could have stolen a bunch of Ketracel white and a ship to escape on with Worf. Now back on DS9, Worf has a bunch of elite warriors under his command who can be taught that there is more to life than just being soldiers.
