Watchmen DVD Features

I know that there are two different versions of the Watchmen DVD coming next month, however I haven't been able to see anything on features, does anyone know if there are audio commentaries on the DVD? I'm going to pony up and get the extended edition.

I believe there's going to be an edition that includes the Black Freighter and Under the Hood segments (which were earlier released on DVD), though I highly doubt it's actually integrated into the film.

I think Black Freighter will be integrated at least. There's footage in one of the behind the scenes documentaries on the Black Freighter DVD that show them shooting the bits with the kid reading the comic at the news stand and how they plan to go in and out of it.

Last I heard, there's a Director's Cut out in a month or so that's about 20 minutes longer than the theatrical version, and then an Insane Cut (with the Black Freighter and heaps more) released late this year/early next.

I don't understand the need for the Black Freighter baloney in this movie. I saw the BF dvd, and it was ... well, it was just mind-numbingly stupid. It doesn't connect with the story of the Watchmen in any way. What's the point?

The Black Frieghter story was a metaphor for Adrien Viedt's life and struggles, which were curiously absent from the film. In the comic, it's given in bits and pieces throughout the story while Viedt's origin is held 'til the end (the last or second to last chapter).

Boring-ass documentary, yes. I have not read the comic. And the BF cartoon simply does not stand on its own, nor does it connect in any way to the Watchmen movie.

The Extended Edition or Director's Cut (I think they're calling it the latter) has something like 26 minutes of extra footage from the movie. I saw on Best Buy that the two disc DVD has two features that is why I was wondering if there were plans to include anything else. If there is going to be a mega multiple disc DVD with Black Frieghter included next year then I may hold off on getting the two disc set.

I'll go for the extended cut, but I already own the Tales of the Black Freighter/Under the Hood DVD, so I hope that isn't included in the new set.

The Black Freighter story, at least as presented in the context of the novel, does fit in with the main thread... it's a cautionary tale about letting yourself become a monster in the name of doing good, of how the ends don't necessarily justify the means, of how we can become what we loath despite our best intentions... Rorschach and Ozy are two sides of the same coin from this perspective, and by going along with it, Dr. M and the rest join in the fun and add the blood to their hands. Are they being heroic or just assuring their own damnation? Well that's the fun part!

I doubt there are going to be any audio commentaries just because Warner Bros. has been constantly cheating us out on that front. IIRC, they haven't included any commentary tracks on any of the DVD versions of Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, I Am Legend, Superman Returns, or V for Vendetta.

(Speaking of Warner Bros. & bonus features, I'm having similar problems learning exactly what kind of features are going to be included on the new Ninja Turtles box set this August.)

For Watchmen, while the original book is not one of my favorites, I thought it was an impressive piece of story/character construction. The movie failed to truly capture that. And when you diminish that, all we're left with is a bunch of crappy, overwrought slo-mo action scenes left over from 300. I'll hold off on the extended cut DVD unless it gets some glowing reviews and, in particular, rehabilitates Laurie's character arc.

The reason I ask about the audio commentaries is because 300 did contain a track from Zack Snyder so he's recorded one before, you'd think he do so again in a film he seemed to be so passionate about making.
