Watching Babylon 5 for the first time... *Spoilers, duh*

^I stand corrected. A bit silly really, I should have checked the date.

Christy Marx said in her intro to "Grail" that JMS added the crop circle alien to the script so perhaps having been asked about the one fostered the other? No telling.

I have wondered about 'Late Delivery from Avalon' and the sword. Could that sword have been meant to be the inspiration for the change of B5 emblem from olive wreath to sword? I know the episode comes one or two after the emblem change, but I wondered if it was meant to be shown earlier or could it be seen as such. Is this making any sense? I always thought that it would be a nice explanation for the station emblem change.

My thought was that the emblem change came at the moment that the 'last best hope for peace' became the 'last best hope for victory' but the only post I can find of JMS' regarding the new emblem does come in response to a question about what happened to the sword:

No, you were being clear, I was just being puckish.

Well, in theory.

I actually haven't worked out what she did with the sword, or
who has it now. I have several options on this, all of them
interesting, and never made the final decision. Maybe they used it to
make the new emblem. Lemme dwell on this.

I'm not able to fire up the DVDs right now but can somebody pinpoint when exactly the emblem changed? As many of you know, my script collection comes from a member of the art department and there are sometimes notes about production needs in them. I can check that if I know when the change takes place. My feeling is that it was olive branch through 'Severed Dreams' and changed after that?

'Ceremonies of Light and Dark' starts with the Olive wreath emblem and ends with the Sword emblem. I really don't see Late Delivery from Avalon fitting in here, it is just a personal feeling. I liked the story and it made a story of redemption and renewal that goes along well with Delenn's ceremony. I imagine her suggesting the sword as a new station insignia for the host of personal meanings she could derive for herself. I imagine it would play well with Sheriden's world view too. I suppose one could imagine Avalon fitting in between 'Severed dreams' and Ceremonies of Light and Dark' It works for me.

In addition, I think Dave Corwin takes to wearing the stations casual uniform from this point on rather than the full Earthforce outfit he usually wore. I always wanted to learn what happened to him in the future of the show.

I checked the script and while it mentions the new B5 patch on the new uniforms, I don't see anything about the set dressing.

Trivia note since I was reading the notes written in the script: The stuff they were drinking in the bar scene was the chocolate drink Yoo-Hoo.

It seems as though the symbol changed on the uniforms in "Ceremonies of Light and Dark" which is two episodes before "Late delivery from Avalon".

I wonder if the production order and release order were different.

The timing seems slightly off then.

At the very end of Ceremonies, you can see Ivonva's left arm enough to see that its a rectangle patch. It's clearly not the original B5 logo.

Best I can think is they were attempting to resolve this issue in the scripts but production order got slightly messed up along the way and it ended up being an overlooked detail.

Either way, that would make for a pretty cool mythos behind why the sword is in the B5 Shield. I never gave it much thought personally.

The general Army of Light logo also had a sword in it (upper right corner of this image). The only place I remember seeing it offhand is in the war room, which I don't think had been unrolled yet. Maybe Excalibur was in that one, or intended to be.

Certainly within the bounds of possibility, though I wouldn't care to speculate on what goes through Joe's head at times. Some things man was not meant to know! ;)

I think it cropped up in the council chambers too at some point. That set was in almost constant flux, so I don't recall when exactly, but I have a feeling it was somewhere between 'Shadow Dancing' and 'The Summoning'. I'm pretty sure a version on of it (with a picture of a Llort incorporated) was also used in customs; another set that had the dressing periodically changed.

Incidentally, around the same time I think the logo for the League of Non-Aligned Worlds was changed from the one in the bottom left corner of that image to a more abstract sunburst-like design.

And I believe the Streib were named in honor of the author of "Communion", Whitley Streiber.
Apparently not.

Given the date (10/20/94), I think that post is referring to the alien being sued in "Grail". Regarding the Streibs in "All Alone in the Night" (first aired 2/15/95), JMS wrote in the third script book:

JMS said:
And yes, for those who have wondered, the alien race known as the Streibs in this script were named for alien abduction guru Whitney Strieber.

Thanks for the back-up, Jan!

Well, I already sent her a link to a pic of a friend and me as Lyta & Garibaldi from S5. She liked it enough to ask me to post it publicly on the fan page. I think one item is enough for right now. Maybe I'll post it later. After all, it's HER page, not mine.

Some of the factors that changed the ideal order: Joe himself messed with it (Mind War, And Now for a Word, Day of the Dead), Richard Compton's lack of directing skills meant his episodes took more work (Believers, Grail); the FX team had more work in some episodes (A Race Through Dark Places, Voices of Authority); PTEN confused their own scheduled list (TKO). In the case of Sic Transit Vir I recall it was switched so that Michael York's appearance in Avalon could be aired closer to May sweeps.

Awww, hey, now! That's kinda harsh. Compton directed all my favorite episodes of The Equalizer!
In fact, it was the combo of Compton and Stewart Copeland's music that hooked me on B5 with the pilot movie. Kinda like an Equalizer reunion of sorts. Made me hanker for a series.
