Watching all Trek chronologically

A few months ago, I decided to start watching all Trek chronologically, from Broken Bow to Living Witness. I am in ENT Season 3 ATM, and I really enjoy it. That feeling of nostalgia many people (apparently) have when watching TOS, I get when watching ENT, as it was the show that introduced me to Trek. I just decided to do a review thread about it, to talk about episodes and stuff. I watched "Doctor's Orders" yesterday, so I could start with that one, but I'll go back a few episodes to start with my favourite ENT episode.

Proving Ground:

The epsiode starts out nicely, with Enterprise picking up the kemocite signal they planted in "The Shipment". I was getting a bit tired of all the filler episodes before this one, an it's good that the story is moving along again. When they were saved by the Andorians, there is this funny shot of Shran's antennas behind Archer's head. The epsiode has a lot of these little funny moments, like when Shran tells the Xindi he is from the Andorian Mining Consortium, looking for Archerite. Throughout the episode, I kept hoping the Andorians would actually join Enterprise in the search for the Xindi weapon, even though I knew how it would end (I have seen it before). The fact that they didn't is one of the only things I don't like about this episode.
Score: 9 (I give scores out of 10, BTW)

Stratagem:

We learn to know Degra in this one. When I first saw it, I thought it was another episode like "Twilight" until they showed the deception. I think it would've been even cooler if they had shown Archer opening the door from the inside, so it would have looked as if he was stepping into space. The whole deception of Degra is amusing, especially the last scene when they pretend they have arrived at Azati Prime, and Degra shouts "You'll never get close to the weapon! Our defense perimeter will destroy you!". A problem with the episode is that the Xindi aren't exactly being clever to have their main weapon designer investigate a system were they were just attacked by two enemy ships in a small, weak spacecraft.
Score: 8

Harbinger:

I remember hating this episode when I first watched it. I don't remember why, though, and I liked it this time. The plot with the Sphere-bulider test subject isn't done very good, but the Trip-T'pol and Reed vs. Hayes plots were pretty good. I also liked the scene were Archer got really angry at Reed and Hayes. It was really different from how easy-going he normally is to his crew (still believable, though, as they were indeed behaving like 5 year olds).
Score: 6

Doctor's Orders:

I like Phlox, and I like Phlox-centered episodes (Even "Dear Doctor", bad though the final decision was). When T'pol suddenly showed up, I thought it was a rather stupid mistake by the writers at first, as Archer wouldn't have placed Phlox in command with her awake, but this is of course explained by the twist at the end. That also explains why she didn't help him at all in engineering and when hunting for the Xindi. An interesting thought is that Phlox's subconcious probably came up with the T'pol hallucination to keep Phlox rational, as he would probably have gone insane without her.
Score: 7

Cool. I'll be looking forward to your thread. I just started a chronological re-watch (or first watch, in the case of some later TOS episodes) of Trek a few months ago. With my busy schedule, I'm sure you'll get caught up to me soon. (I'm bogged down in season 1 of TOS right now.)

:) I too will follow this thread. I have had some plans of watching the show cronologically too..

Hatchery:

This episode starts out pretty good. A dilemma is presented: should Enterprise continue to Azati Prime and ignore the hatchery or should they stay and help bring the life-support online? My first reaction was the same as Trip's, but Archer made me realize these are babies of intelligent life-forms, and if it had been Primate-babies, a thought like that wouldn't even have crossed my mind. Then the episode sinks off in a rather dull story where Archer gets obsessive about the hatchery and fires half the senior staff, who mutineer.
Score: 5

BTW, I just realized this is the first episode where Travis did something useful since "Impulse"!

The sad thing about Hatchery is how it becomes a "Captain acts weirdly because of Alien influence" plus "Fake Mutiny" something which already seen plenty of times before and is in essence pointless...

A shame really, I had forgoten about the interesting life support bit...

Good reviews so far, man.

I'd love to take an approach like this, and you're definitely doing a nice job of reminding me that I need to get off my ass and do it.

Interesting.

How do you handle Generations? Watch TUC, then the Generations prologue, then TNG, then the rest of Generations?

Also, how you handle the concurrency of DS9 with TNG/VOY? Stardates are often unavailable or inconsistent. Do you go by air dates?

^I am indeed planning to watch Generations in two parts. As with TNG/DS9/VOY, I plan to do them in the order they are placed on Memory Alpha. A bigger problem is stories in alternate timelines and time travel. I plan to wath them at the time where their Prime Timeline parts play (So Trek XI goes after Nemesis, First Contact goes in DS9 season 5, In a Mirror, Darkly goes after The Tholian Web etc.).

Cool. If you get around to it, maybe you can post a viewing order here, along with the reasoning behind it if there are any situations in which the reasoning is not obvious. It could be useful to anybody who wants to do the same thing, as Aurian and Barniclelapse have indicated they are interested in doing. (And a general rule of thumb is that for everybody who posts something, there are ten unregistered lurkers who feel the same way.)

OK, here's my order:
ENT Season 1-3
ENT Season 4, without In a Mirror, Darkly and These are the Voyages
TOS until The Tholian Web
In a Mirror, Darkly (The Defiant, which is the only thing from the Prime Universe in the episode, comes from The Tholian Web)
Rest of TOS
TAS
Movies 1-6 and the first bit of Generations
TNG Season 1-5
TNG Season 6 and DS9 Season 1
TNG Season 7 until The Pegasus and DS9 Season 2 until The Alternate
These are the Voyages (Set during The Pegasus)
Rest of TNG Season 7 and DS9 Season 2
DS9 Season 3 until Meridian
Generations
Rest of DS9 Season 3 and VOY Season 1
DS9 Season 4 and VOY Season 2
DS9 Season 5 until Things Past and VOY Season 3 until Warlord
First Contact
Rest of DS9 Season 5 and VOY Season 3
DS9 Season 6 and VOY Season 4 (Without Living Witness)
DS9 Season 7 until Covenant and VOY Season 5 until Thirty Days
Insurrection
Rest of DS9 Season 7 and VOY Season 5
VOY Season 6-7
Nemesis
Trek XI (Nero and Spock, the only people from the Prime Universe, are from 2387)
Living Witness (Set in the far future)

I have probably overlooked episodes for that list, though.

Something's inherently wrong with having to get off one's ass to watch TV shows.

...in the late 70's an invention was popularized. It was called a "remote control." *grin*

I didn't care for Hatchery -- I consider it one of the filler episodes -- its only true relevance the acquisition of an insectoid shuttle so they can infiltrate the weapon construction site and some useful info on the spheres. Both could have been incorporated into any episode along the way.

But I did love it when Trip shot Archer!

WOW! You've really given this some thought. I think I'll save this list and try your plan when I can. Unfortunately, I only own ENT and TOS and a few of movies. I guess I'll have to sign up for Netflix.

I'm 23 now, so by the time you finish this project I'll be long dead from the ravages of old age. ;) But I'll follow along until the dementia kicks in.

Why is IaMD after Tholian Web? Granted the Defiant comes from the events in the latter, but if this is intended to be in chronological order, the events of IaMD occur prior to TW, as the Defiant has travelled back in time.

Azati Prime:
I really like this episode. It's got a lot of good scenes, like the scene were Archer says goodbye to the crew, the scene where Archer just laughs in Dolim's face while he's being tortured, and the battle at the end, where Enterprise receives some heavy damage. The waterplanet looks gorgeous. The scene where they destroy the sensorpost on the moon shows how much the Xindi mission is effecting Archer: he's already tortured two people since entering the expanse, and now he murders three. We also see more of T'pol's Trelium addiction than before, when there would be hints of emotion in her voice, but now we actually see her cry.
The scene in the 26th century was interesting. I'm not sure, but I think I could see the USS Prometheus from "Message in a Bottle" during the battle. The Enterprise-J looks really bad on that computer panel, but I've seen renderings of it that make it look rather pretty.
I loved the battle scene, where Enterprise gets a heavy beating. It sent shivers down my spine.
Overall, this episode felt a bit like the best bits of nuBattlestar Galactica, but in a good way.
Score: 8

Damage:
This may well be Trek's second-darkest hour (After "The Siege of AR-558", that is). Not only have seventeen people died (The scene where Archer comes in sickbay and gets briefed on the casualties, and his voice sounds like he's crying was very powerful), is T'pol's addiction to Trelium getting so bad that she almost gets herself killed over it, and is Enterprise looking like the razed city from "Chosen Realm", but Archer makes an extremly unethical decision, marooning a group of innocent aliens 3 years from home. I really like how they made all the sets underlighted and broken, and had most main characters wounded and dirty looking. Two things I didn't notice the first time I saw this episode, as I hadn't seen DS9 back then, is that the alien captain is played by Casey Biggs, and that the sphere builder is reminiscent of the Female Founder.
Score: 8
