I can't remember a time when I haven't seen it. I remember showing it to a younger kid, like 19 recently, and he always kept asking me when the "action" would happen. Me: I remember as a kid really understanding not just the words spoken by the characters, but their meaning. "The needs of the many.." resonated with me asa child, and it continues to do so. The fact that Khan would rather get revenge on Kirk rather than rule the universe also resonated with me.. it was more an act of wounded pride than a realistic set of goals.
The film is like a play, rather sparse, with a slower pace than many films of today. I still find myself being absorbed by its spell, it's respect for the characters, and the impossible decisions that must be faced by all.
Hollywood has tried to reproduce this film in structure mainly, but they can't seem to to realize that a really good stoy means creating a great set of characters and challenging them, that means both heroes and villains. challenging them not with physical obstacles but with ideas that they are not adept at dealing wtih. This film does that for every main character.
