Watch all Star Trek Series but not TOS. Not Sure If I should

I find TNG hard to watch because so much of the time it was just downright dull. Modern Trek had a problem with that in general, but TNG seemed to lead the pack in the dull category.

That's because TNG was mired in excessive technobabble (to where I just started hating Geordi), and devoted in part to the celebration of government and military bureaucracy. The Enterprise crew fought far more politicians and diplomats than it did Cardassians and Romulans in its run.

Well, to be fair to TNG, Kirk and Company had their fair share of run-ins with Federation officials. :techman:

Picard is the antithesis of Kirk. Picard could philosophize you to death and everything was run by committee. I'm not sure how anything got done there. Ugh..and Counselor Troi feeling out the situation. If she were in TOS, it would be Kirk who'd be doing the feeling.

I might watch that, thanks

Why "might"? You want to know if the show is any good and he posted up an episode for you to watch for free. Most people consider it one of the best episodes. You could save yourself a lot of money on bluerays by just spending 50 minutes of your life watching this and seeing if you enjoy it.

BTW I am not trying to be a jerk or anything, and I'm glad you are interested in watching TOS. But I guess it's a little frustrating that people have named tons of ways (some free) to watch the show for you already and we kind of wonder why you just don't sit down and watch a couple already?

Hope you enjoy it! Watch a few episodes and then you can decide whether it's worth buying them on DVD or Blueray or whatever. And come back and let us know what you think even if you hate it.

Your comments don't make you sound like a jerk.

Has the person who posed the question made up his/her mind yet? Is he/she still gathering data? What's the hold-up?

I don't mean to be flippant. It's not a life or death decision. It's not that complicated. I don't get the "might" either. It's as easy as clicking the "play" button -- or not. Nothing to buy, no need to do any searches, it's free and it's right here in Trek BBS. Sorry if I offended anyone. :)

By the way, "The Doomsday Machine" is a very entertaining episode.

I can't recall the episode, but it was a dire situation, with enemies all around and it seemed like someone was going to start shooting at any second. Picard looked at his bridge crew and said... "Conference". And everybody walked off to the briefing room.

:wtf:

"Q Who?" Season 2, the first apperance of the Borg.

I agree with this.

IronMaiden,

Did you watch this episode that Maurice put up for you? If so, what is your opinion of it? If you didn't take the time to watch, why not? As pointed out, it is one of the better episodes out there and is the favourite of many people.

You simply HAVE to watch the entire original series. Watch them on Netflix, if you don't want to spend money on the DVDs. I believe you'd gain a whole new appreciation for the history of Star Trek, and it will inform all the other Trek you watch--forever.

BoT, I think they were in a long stern chase with nothing happening at the moment. Plenty of time to assess the situation. TNG, it was right at the crisis point.

Dude- TOS is the best series!! I seriously can't imagine having my life lived without seeing this show, which I am watching right now. The 60s era clothes, hairstyles, music, props, etc + all the actors- do yourself a huge favor, and cherish it. :techman:

This thread is a week old and you haven't been able to carve out an hour to watch an episode for free? This thread feels oddly similar to another thread from a few months ago.

As someone who grew up on 24th-century Trek -- and, in general, on more recent television -- I find it helpful to think of TOS almost as theater.

Star Trek in general is very theatrical, but TOS especially so. For instance, start with the dialogue. With the exception of Enterprise, none of the Star Trek series really tried to make their dialogue sound realistic to contemporary ears. One advantage of this is that it keeps the dialogue from becoming painfully dated; there's no "groovy" slang or anything other than correct, formal English, something that changes very slowly. However, it also gives the dialogue a theatrical, oratorical feel. (It helps that William Shatner, Patrick Stewart and Avery Brooks all did extensive Shakespere work before Trek.)

Thinking of it as theater also helps when you're watching a '60s show as someone who's become used to modern TV techniques. In a stage play, nobody really expects hyper-realism in special effects. Many things are suggested rather than shown, and the convention is that you simply suspend disbelief -- ignoring, for example, the proscenium, the visible lighting positions, the actors playing multiple unrelated roles, or any scene changes that may happen with the curtain open. Something like the Gorn or the Horta looks ridiculously fake when you view it through the same lens that you'd view modern TV, but you wouldn't think twice about it on stage.

TOS in particular has a very stylized feel -- everything from the bright colors of the bridge to the way characters are lit to the music cues, which are much more obvious than in any Trek that was made after Season 2 of TNG. Don't expect it to be realistic; think of the lighting and sound as storytelling conventions.

If you've ever seen a show like "West Side Story" or "Les Miserables," try thinking of it more like those. Musical theater in particularly is a very stylized genre. Nobody believes that gangs in New York in the '50s went around spontaneously breaking into elaborately choreographed dance routines, or that heroes and villains in 18th-century France went around singing to each other. But those are the conventions the genre uses to tell its stories, and both shows, when done right, are very powerful pieces of theater.

As Yogi once said, it's deja vu all over again.

Sorta sad, really. Spends hours thinking and talking about thinking about watching one episode - but still doesn't even when one is handed on a platter to him. Having us on, maybe...

Funny, I've never found the dialogue in Trek TOS (or most other TV dramas of the 1950s and '60s, for that matter) to be particularly "formal" or "theatrical." But then, I think the dialogue in a lot of modern TV is too colloquial and the actors sound like they have marbles in their mouths.
