Wasn't Beverly wrong about Ronin's age?

So, I was bored tonight. Absolutely nothing to do whatsoever.

So, I decided to look at the Sub Rosa episode.

Then a particular scene got my attention. The scene where Beverly revisits her house for the second time.

So, she encounters the ghost and after a bit of harrassing her, he reveals to her that he was born in 1647. Then Beverly questions her seemingly without even having to think, "So, you're an 800-year-old ghost?"

Curiously interested, I whipped out my calculator and added 1647 and 800 and got 2447...



So... Sub Rosa is a Season 7 episode, so it took place in the year 2370.

Then, I did 2370 from 1647 and got 723. It's very much to say Ronin is obviously right about his own age, and Sub Rosa actually is cannon to the show and definitely didn't take place in 2447. Assuming both, should'nt've Beverly's line been "So, you're a 700-year-old ghost?"

So apparently, Ronin has been seducing all the women in Beverly's ancestors for centuries, yet her grandmother never wrote a word about him??? Why???

Could it be that Ronin threatened her not to speak of him?

No she did round up. (She said "800" instead of "700", 700 is technically closer than 800.)

I think saying "800" is fine. Sure, it's an over-estimation and 70-some years off but I wouldn't say she was "wrong" so much as she just over spoke.

For my money, "800" is good enough.

Oh, okay. Fair enough.

But since the correct number was 723, and 700 is much closer to that than 800, I was just thinking she should've said 700.

But then again Beverly was so shaken, she could barely think straight so I see why whoever writen the screenplay put 800 instead and got it wrong on purpose.

Well, 700 is "closer" and probably would've been the better choice when rounding but 800 is probably "close enough" when you're talking about an entity that can live that long to begin with.

What probably happened, behind the scenes, is that someone wrote that Ronan was born in 16-whatever and that TNG took place in the 24 century and, well, the math mistake writes itself.

Might simply be that a completed mission of seduction results in a "Howard woman" who has no interest in babbling about her lover, or contradicting him, or disobeying him. Beverly just didn't reach that point yet, and retained a bit of free will. She did resign from Starfleet and snap at her former CO, suggesting that she was well on the way to keeping big secrets from the rest of the world, including relatives.

Whether considered "ghost" or "anaphasic lifeform", Ronin was apparently generally hated and feared throughout history. It would be vital for him to control his "receptacles" into keeping his secret, and we see much of that happening on screen. It's only natural to think it happened more fully to all of Beverly's ancestors.

Now, should we discuss (again) the third oddity in the episode - the concept of "Howard women" in a society that has been patrilinear for most of the 700+ (or 800-) years of Ronin courting them?

Well... I could've watched Masks that I love so much. All Good Things... would've bored me even more!

Preemptive Strike I would've fallen asleep... like Data's story of Thine Own Self.

Why? Was Sub Rosa another hated episode?

She did resign from Starfleet and snap at her former CO, suggesting that she was well on the way to keeping big secrets from the rest of the world, including relatives.

I just found it so interesting that when Beverly snapped at Picard, even though he outranks her, he's still all calm and collected about it. Well, he did invade her privacy so...

I also found it interesting that despite being a ghost, Ronin could be effected and vaporized by phaser energy.

Well, Beverly, don't forget you're also a Science officer and science relate to medical studies... and math!

16+8 is 24.



In essence, the writer probably just didn't take into account that the 1600s were the 17th century and just subtracted 1600 from 2400, figuring that the "24th century" were the 2400s. It's an "easy" mistake to make.

Well, Bev may be expected to be better or quicker at math, but she didn't have the luxury of using a calculator, after converting her present Stardate to Earth's Julian Calendar.

She also wasn't musing over some numbers she once heard 17 (or is it 18 ) years ago, she was being confronted by a freakin' ghost, so I think her ballpark rounding was quite acceptable (maybe the most acceptable part of the whole episode)

OK now I'm bored, so I think I'll go watch anything other than "Sub Rosa"
