Was the Enterprise D a gross misallocation?

The Enterprise-D wasn't a flawed design, but she was frequently put in tough situations that would probably destroy a lesser ship. In that regard, the Enterprise-D was incredibly resilient and maybe more than most ships. But no starship is perfect, nor invincible--even the most powerful vessel can be taken down with just one well-placed hit.

Yeah. This is what happened in Generations. But I agree that the E-D survived really tough situations.

Someone mentioned a battleship. How long would a battleship last against even a small destroyer if you stripped the battleship of all of it's armor? Left it with the hull of a cruise ship.

It's shields are the Enterprise's armor, the ship's hull was likely little protection against the BOP's guns and torpedoes, with no expectation that the hull would be.

Because Starfleet officers don't kill people, while wearing the same clothes?

Was Riker wearing Picard's pants again! That happens during late night sleepovers.

I meant a military organization involves chains of command and ranks of authority that it's common knowlege to all of it's members that they obey the orders of someone that out ranks them unless it's in violation of other rules. Weapons or combat are not necessarily a part of it.

I'd just like to point out that the Constitutions in their day were considered supremely tough and yet (according to the lore) Enterprise was the only one of the original 13 to survive to ~2270, when she put into San Fran for her refit. Given her generally accepted launch date of 2245, and that she was the first built of the line, that's 1 ship every ~2 years on average. (though we know that several were lost in rapid succession between 2265 and 2269).

Of the 12 known or postulated Galaxy hulls, 3 were lost in the first 7 years of the class' service. That is approximately the same average rate/year as the Connies.

Not too shabby.

Also, remember the original project plan for the Galaxys was 20-year deep space exploration unsupported. That's why they were so big, so luxurious, and included families. They never got to be used for that purpose, because the Romulans re-emerged, and they discovered/were discovered by the Borg, etc. Starfleet apparently made the call to keep them closer to home in case they would be needed.
