Was Tennant *Your* Doctor?

StarMan

Vice Admiral
Admiral
He was mine.

I've always been aware of WHO but never followed it to the extent I have TREK. It was a blip on my radar when I heard of its new found life under Russell T Davies.

It wasn't till Tennant though that the mythos of WHO really grabbed me. To me he IS The Doctor, in the same way I suppose those introduced in the 80's era will still associate Baker as the archetypal model of The Doctor.

Anyone else feel a little melancholy given Tennant's time is nigh?

Undoubtedly yes, he was my Doctor from "New teeth..." onwards, to the point that i am unsure whether i will continue watching the show once he departs.

No, if we're to treat 'your' Doctor as the one your grew up with watching his weekly adventures, then mine would be McCoy. That's not to say that McCoy was my favourite Doctor mind..

Tennant has been a fine Doctor but my DW roots go pretty far back. "My" Doctor was Patrick Troughton. Although I started watching DW during William Hartnell's last series, it was "the little tramp" who really captured my loyalty. We moved back to the US during Troughton's last season so until the advent of Netflix, I'd never seen Pertwee, C. Baker or McCoy (except in his regen scenes in the movie) and had only seen T. Baker in PBS reruns. For me, Troughton WAS The Doctor.

So, I was especially excited to read that Steven Moffat said that Troughton was HIS Doctor, too. I'm hoping that Matt Smith will bring some of the Second Doctor's characteristics to his own portrayal.

This for me as well - I was never a big fan of Eccleston - watching the current re-run of season 1 on BBC3, I'm still not. Tennant was the character for me, he was the one who got me into the show, and got me hooked. It remains to be seen whether I will continue to be hooked with a new Doctor.

I'd say Tom Baker is my Doctor. He's the one I first saw as a kid and made me love the show.

That said, Tennant is definitely a huge favorite as well and I'm really sad to see him go.

But I have faith in the people who run Doctor Who, so I'm sure Matt Smith will be good too.:bolian:

He had a good run but it's probably a good time for the change.

Agreed!

"My" first Doctor was Tom Baker. "My" Doctor, however, is Christopher Eccleston. Don't get me wrong. I love all my children, even the crazy ones (i.e. Colin). But, Chris did something that, really, only Tom Baker has done before, and that's created an entirely NEW persona, relatively free of previous incarnations. That's always been what keeps me from getting into Tennant as much as everyone else. I can literally see David using bits and pieces from previous Doctors to create Ten. And honestly, it just never comes across as sincere for me. The entire time I watch David Tennant, I'm fully aware that he's "playing The Doctor". Which, taken in small doses, is perfectly fine. But, I cannot readily describe Tennant's Doctor without using the same adjectives I would use to describe Tom Baker....."zany".

Eccleston, on the other hand, came in with a Doctor I had never seen before. He didn't remind me of any Doctor previous, and at first I was taken aback a little bit. But, as his season progressed, I begin to realize I was watching The Doctor....a lonely, ancient godling who was suffering from a post-War trauma, and a severe case of survivor's guilt. Culminating that into an obvious deathwish, and the 9th Doctor became something completely new to Doctor Who. Which is exactly what it needed.

I think Tennant did a great job, for a fan who landed the role. However, I hope Smith's relative detachment from being a fan of the show will prompt some more of the "new" that Christopher Eccleston brought to the role. He was, as you would guess, Fantastic! :techman:

First doctor I got to watch was Eccleston. I was sad that he left but we got Tennant :D

Now i've got an action figure of him and some of his traits have worn off on me(hands in pockets)

Hoping to find some converse like him. I saw a pair of black ones and a white/brown looking pair at DSW for 45 bucks.

Anyone see the guy at Comic Con that told Tennant "Your My Doctor"

I was a child during the 1970s, so I always thought of Tom Baker when I thought of Dr Who. But I never actually got to see much of him, cos my dad absolutely hated DW (still does, the grumpy old git). I saw bits and bobs of Davison and didn't like Colin Baker or Sly McCoy. Saw the McGann movie, liked his Doctor a lot, but a 90 minute movie isn't long enough for someone to become 'my' Doctor.

I really liked Eccleston and was gutted when he left. For a while, I couldn't enjoy DT quite as much - the post by The summed up much of my thinking too. I always liked David but for the first season or two, I just sort of missed Eccleston and would watch DW imagining how he would play a scene.

Now, though, I would have to say that Tennant is MY Doctor. He has had three full seasons plus the specials and in that time has shown many facets of his Doctor, the full range of emotions, sides and abilities. He just owns the screen when on it. I think he's the modern day Tom Baker and appeals to all ages for all reasons. So I don't envy Matt Smith - but I will do my best to enjoy his performance and not sit and wonder how David would play a particular scene ...

Yes, definetely. He's my Doctor, too. I'm a bit anxious how the show will continue after him. Well, we'll always have his episodes to came back to if we wish.

wamdue, I hate to break it to you guys, but they will *never* bring David Tennant back to replace Matt Smith, no matter what. I will bet you any amount of money on that. I lived through the era that replaced Tom Baker. A lot of fans wished for the same thing, that maybe Baker would come back if Peter sucked. It doesn't work that way, and I absolutely can say with at least as much confidence as anyone who has watched the show for thirty years, that there is NO chance of Tennant "un-regenerating" back into the role. Even if they brought 10.5 over from the AltUniverse (which they won't), he wouldn't be The Doctor. I am sorry to bust the fan-bubble like this. But, this is what Doctor Who is all about. Change and progression. Enjoy your Doctor while you got him, because once he regenerates, all you can hope for is an anniversary special one day... :techman:

Yes. I watched Eccleston first and liked the show, but there's something about David Tennant's performances that just captivate me. I was extremely sad to hear that he was leaving the show.

Now, I'm looking forward to more Dr. Who, but there's something in me that knows that no matter how good Matt Smith is, he'll never eclipse David Tennant. I'd love to be wrong, but right now I can't imagine feeling differently. (Then again, I was also sure that no companion could be better than Rose and that Donna was a terrible choice...)

My first Doctor was Tom Baker ("Horns of Nimon" FTW!), but Tennant is my Doctor, especially this last season... they finally matched him up with the right companion.
