I'm of two minds about this.

Could the Death Star have frakked Scareth, if the Rebellion hadn't buggered it's planetary shields?

If current planetary Shields, or maybe the next generation of planetary Shields can make a planet Death Star Proof, that makes the power of the Death Star impotent and moot, for any world rich enough to buy new/good Deathstar Proof planetary Shields.

For the cost of building one Death Star, the Emperor can then sell 20,000 planetary shields.

Which would more than balance the imperial budget.

Sheev is a skeevy old geezer. :)

Kinda irrelevant if the rebels destroyed the shield or not. The people who controlled the on off switch for the shield controlled the Death Star. If the shield needed to go down before the Death Star weapon could be of use, that could have been arranged.

However, I'm of the camp that the planetary shield wouldn't have mattered. That Death Star weapon was going to destroy it's target. I'll have to see evidence to the contrary before I believe it.

There is a theory that Alderaan had a planetary shield up when the Death Star fired at it. Didn't do much to stop the blast....maybe a fraction of a second.

Well, Shawnster, logically if the Shields have to be turned off by the Death Star, because it's well within their power to do that to Imperial Bases, in this specific case, then they are only bothering to turn off the shields because it's necessary?

Note also, the Deathstar was only destroying small cities, not entire planets.

If they are raiding Jedi temples for kyber crystals, it calls into question, how many times they can actually use their big gun, if the specific fuel for it is so scarce, compared to what ever bargain basement crystal is used to make regular lasers and turbo lasers.

Which means that this is more likely a political weapon of intimidation, that is rarely (if ever) to be used if there are only enough Kyber Crystals in the Galaxy to use the Death Star's Super Turbo laser less than a dozen times... Which might be another reason why the Jedi were eliminated, because they were suckling on Death Star Fuel Sheev knew he was going to need down the line.

I think it wouldn't have mattered.
First, the Deathstar could have targeted the station generating the shield, like the Alliance was doing and eventually succeeded at.
Second, the alliance forces were probing the shield with conventional fighter weapons and thought they could wear it down a bit.
Deathstar blast would have done the trick.

The purpose of the shield was not to prevent planetary bombardment, at least not primarily, but create a choke point for in and outgoing traffic to make inspections easier and prevent planet fall by unauthorized forces.

Never mind the rebels using the same trick twice basically to smuggle in ground forces with a stolen shuttle to sabotage two deathstars.
