Was it a mistake to do a movie set in TOS time period?

Just as in WOK and TUC. Need I remind you? That electronic whistle for example...lol-worthy. The ludicrous overdone militarism with bunk-beds and stuff in VI just so they could fall out of them once the ship gets attacked? Cut the new guys some slack.
I actually liked the militarism, personally. STVI is still my favorite of the movies. And what parts of those movies was really flash over substance?

Okay, but did the plot of ST V make sense? The whole Genesis stuff in ST III was just crazy shit. Alot in WOK didn't make sense, at best was a case of ridiculous coincidences (as some reviews have also said about this flick). And the same goes for Star Trek VI.
I'd compare this movie to STV in the making sense department. STIII I can sort of see, and personally I loath it because of what it did to the Klingons in prelude to their treatment in 24th Century Trek, but I don't see nearly as many issues with STII or STVI as I see with this movie.

I suppose both the TMP/TWOK/SFS bridge, just liek the new one, are victims of fashion that soon feel old and over-the top due to the kewlness-over-functionality approach.
For me the funny part is how they claim they had to justify each little button when it's pretty obvious that there isn't much functionality to that ship. Even the corridors are a huge waste of space thanks to their circular cross-section.

I kinda liked it too in both ST II and VI although it seems un-TOS and unnecessary. Because it looks cool.
The new uniforms were cool, it was cool when the BOP attack made those cadets fly out of their bunk-beds,
it was cool when that dumbass Scotty carried wounded Peter Preston's body through half the ship so we could have a shocking surprise on the bridge.
Heck even the blinking lights were cool (although they made Regula one look like some christmas lights shop).

It worked. It was effective. It was a good watch.

After the motionless picture they took a few lessons from Star Wars, hired ILM and made a movie with lots of action, fast-paced and with an overly melodramatic score.
Did TWOK have that much substance? Yeah Kirk was getting old and his son showed up (I'm sure this movie has similar stuff)
Genesis- this huuuge moral dilemma of possibly turning it into a weapon, a guy seeking revenge...come on! It was a "flashy" movie for its time.
