Was Ezri Dax a poor choice?

There has been talk since the ending of Deep Space 9 that Ezri Dax was a poor choice as a replacement. Would love to understand your personal feelings with Ezri Dax.

Was Ezri Dax a bad idea because of the actor?
Was Ezri Dax a bad idea because of the writters?
Was Ezri Dax a bad idea as it was adding a new Dax to DS9?

You can add more and I will debate with you.

Ezri Dax, as far as the show is concerned, was a poor choice because of the completely limited amount of time to develop her character. HOWEVER, now that I'm through the heart of the DS9 Relaunch (just finished Unity, reading "The Lives of Dax" right now)-- the character Ezri gave the relaunch writers GOLD to work with. Ezri Dax becomes one of my favorite relaunch characters.

That is why I love Ezri Dax as someone that loves to role play. There is so much play with the way to develop the character without risking canon.

I didn't mind the new Dax host being Ezri, especially since Jadzia was such a weak character. The ludicrous part of the whole thing was that she was assigned to DS9. They just HAPPENED to need a counselor..please. Also they made such a huge deal with reassociation being considered a bad thing in Trill society, and completely dropped that with the Ezri thing.

Also, I can guarantee you that the actress doesn't read any of the DS9/TNG books that feature her character. What possible reason would there be for her to do that?

Agreed, DS9 did not need a counselor and a counselor in my judgment needed counseloring. Reassociating was dumped. In my judgment Ezri Dax was on Earth and so was Sisko in New Orleans. Ezri came just to meet Sisko and talk. She did not know she was going to get into a ship and then return to DS9. Maybe she thought she would get a free meal. It was Sisko that really wanted her to be on DS9 and he pulled this and that. Heck, he made it so she became a Lt Jg from the rank of Ensign.

I disagree that Nicole does not pay any attention with books about her character. Would even bet she has an agreement that her likeness is coyprighted and therefore if you use an image of her she must receive some type of royalty.

I don't think so. I'm fairly certain that Paramount holds the rights to the images of Ezri Dax, for instance if you've seen the trading cards the rights are for Paramount, and they can only use the images from her time on Deep Space nine for any other work.

I have to say I liked Ezri on the crew. It was difficult to introduce someone in the last season with so much going on, but having a less confident and confused character made a nice contrast - it would have been too easy to make someone similar, and although it's a sexist opinion I don't think a male actor could have pulled off as much empathy as Nicole de Boer did her more ditzy role.

There was one line I particularly liked with her, the accidental harshness of telling Bashir that Jadzia would have been with him if Worf never showed up. But she did help in finaly ending the lonliness we saw in Bashir, ending up being just as confused as Worf post-Jadzia and changed the Sisko-Dax dynamic to even more of a mentor.

It was nice to see a Trill family too, as most of the Trill-based storylines were about the about the symbiont relationship.

But I'm a little biased, seeing as I battled between Ezri and Ziyal to name my daughter ;)

Great post Jamestyler, I agree with all your points.

So what did you choose, Ezri or Ziyal?

I had a cat named Ezri once (and a WoW char named Ezri).

This is exactly how I felt about her, She just did not have the time to develope. I was used to Jadzia and actually like the character and was pulling for her and Worf.

Pity it had to end in such a way but that is how it goes, I started to warm up to Erzi but we ran out of season and alas it was the final season.

She has become one of my favorites in the relaunch series however :)

So I guess I say both :)

I went with Ezri. I was going to go with Ezri Tigan, but I was informed by her mother that was going too far ;)

I just discovered a girl on a non-Trek forum has cats called Jadzia and Elim. For some reason this has made her 53% more attractive.

Very sure that Nicole Deboer is reading every single book that has been published since 1999. If not, her agent has been reading every single book.
She may read some books if she likes them, but definitely not every single one that features Ezri.

They do not want to have her character be undermined with a published book.
You do realize that no one involved with the books gives a rat's ass about Nicole deBoer and her agent's opinion, right?
I'm pretty sure Nicole has better things to do than thinking about stuff in books that may or may not "undermine" a character she played for one year a decade ago.

Ugh, Ezri bugs me even more in the relaunches than she did in the series! She acts like she's got some control, but she doesn't, says horrible things for no reason, acts like a child at times when she thinks she's being all grown up. Refuses to mourn the dead or properly show those emotions because she thinks it will undermine her, has inflated reactions to everything. If I was on a ship with her I would have decked her at least 5 times in the last 6 years (From Abyss to Destiny) She has all these memories, but she never uses them in any sensible, logical way, they just make her do dumb things.

Holy cow!! I just realized Nicole is 38!! Dear land time is passing!

Was Ezri Dax a bad idea because of the actor? No. I think Nicole deBoer gave us exactly what the writers asked of her. She's a perfectly capable actress.

Was Ezri Dax a bad idea because of the writers? I think the writers made a poor choice, not in the character, but in the saturation of the character. Ezri was a great foil to Jadzia, and to this seasoned and hardened group of people. The problem I think a lot of people had, is that every single episode seemed to be about her for a while. You know? I know the writers felt they had to make us care about her, and therefore gave us a lot of Ezri stories. I think they tried too much.

Was Ezri Dax a bad idea as it was adding a new Dax to DS9? I don't think we needed another Dax, and I wouldn't have missed Ezri had she not been there. But a bad idea? Eh. I think it was more an execution problem than an idea problem in the end.

I can't speak for Nicole, but after hearing Avery Brooks and other actors talk, once the show was done, the character was done - at least in their minds.

I think the real mistake was not killing off Jadzia earlier. To really explore the contrasts and differences between the two, Ezri should have had at least 2 seasons to be explored if not more.

No, cuz Jadzia was useful, can you imagine tripping over Ezri during the entire war? Dear Land!!

Congratulations on a fantastic name! I have always thought of all Trek names that is one of the nicest to give a baby. Do you tell people when they ask that it is a Star Trek name?

I currently have a cat named Wicket after the leader of the Ewoks in ROTJ, lol.

Points from other posts:

I don't care for poor Ezri in relaunch at all. I feel they are just rewriting her character and using her being joined as an excuse. I just started Destiny so I'm hoping she improves.

The suggestion that they should have killed off Jadzia a season earlier--YES great idea. We would have had plenty of Jadzia and more Ezri development.

I am sure they have the image of Ezri Dax when she was on DS9. That would be under Paramount with the copyright.

The question is this, if someone makes an image of Ezri Dax to be on the cover on the book: is that image copyrighted for Paramount of with Nicole Deboer.

I can take an image of Nicole any time after DS9 and place spots on her with photoshop and stick it on anything I want to sell. Im sure an image of Nicole when she was on THE DEAD ZONE with photoshop spots would not be copyrighted with Paraount.

The spots and character are copyright Paramount. Nicole herself isnt, obviously, but the telltale spots and especially the uniform IS.

That true!

Problem was this. Everyone was on a six year contract and only Terry (Jadzia) wanted to leave the show. They wanted her to say for the last season. It was Terry that gave us Ezri Dax.

Second, there was zero reason to firer Terry in season 6. With her and Worf, I am sure they were going to make Jadzia have a baby in season 7. That would have made it an interesting final season. Oh ya, hmmm ... that happen with Voyager.

Has anyone noticed that nobody, not a single actor of DS9 or any Star Trek series has been in a Star Trek uniform. Maybe, Nicole Deboer cannot be in public with a uniform on period.

Thats true, Nicole Deboer image outside of Star Trek is not copyrighted. Question becomes, if the image of Nicole Deboer in anything other then a Star Trek Uniform or with the Trill spots are not copyrighted.

Therefore, I do really believe that Nicole Deboer has copyrighted her image. It pretects Paramount, it pretects her from people that does use her image.

Of course, we can do a Google and find images made with fans with the image of Ezri Dax. Still, that was not the point with the copyrights. They are really to small to go after.

Since you would have liked to see more of her in the series, what do you find about her that is different in the Relaunch?

I find her louder, bossier, and... so on, but she bugged me anyway. And she sometimes bugs me in Destiny too, but I think that is in keeping with her character from the series maybe?

And why would Ezri dump all that Gagh- they're living animals, instead of just giving them to someone to give to a Klingon so she wouldn't have to share? Give them to Odo, he doesn't eat, so couldn't share.
