The character of Cochrane in TOS and the one in the movie is SO different, it must have been intentional to have him be a representation of Roddenberry. Wish they had renamed the character.

Over two hundred years passed between the flight of the Phoenix and "Metamorphosis". That is A LOT of time between his remaining years on Earth and a lot more with the companion. I think that is bound to change anyone dramatically. The companion rejuvenating his health combined with his century of sobriety certainly factored in.
