Warner Bros. Circling David Ayer for DC Comics’ ‘Suicide Squad’

I just saw the "Batman Assault on Arkham" animated movie last night.... which turned out to be a Suicide Squad movie guest-starring Batman, actually. It was good. Definitely the most sexual and violent DC animated movie ever. Really great animation!

To be Devil's Advocate, part of the fun of Suicide Squad is seeing established characters, mostly villains, used in a way that's different than their regular appearances. Boomerang and Deadshot, especially went from one-dimensional villains to fully fleshed out characters. In a movie, we won't have the advantage of having a working knowledge of B, C, D and below list villains.

Plus, I feel that John Ostrander really embraced the inherent lameness and campiness of these villains and subverted expectations by putting them into really dangerous, dark situations. The mix of light and dark tones really made it a great series.

A TV series featuring a bunch of the baddies that Arrow and Flash have been up against would work better.

Still, the done properly, it would be a great movie fitting in nicely with DC's "dark" direction in films. Sadly, though, that would mean no mystery of the pie-thrower or "Boomerbutt" craziness that Ostrander used to great effect in between the serious tone of the series.

Have you seen Arrow?

Amanda Waller and the Suicide Squad are already major players.

:)

There was an annual in 89 or 90, where a team of 7 or 8 villains went in and not only did only one guy make it out, but when the helicopter showed up to recover the team, there was only one seat in the chopper.

Giffen did a great book in 2001.

They churned through the database of unuasable villians who no one would mind being rendered into glue.

But it was mostly about the "call centre" selecting and running the missions.

Yes, I do watch Arrow and that's why I think Suicide Squad would make for a better TV show.

And I think you're comment about the "database of unusable villains" underscores my point about needing crappy villains, who are already established for it to work well.

It already works well on a TV show so that's largely irrelevant to this discussion. I don't think the Suicide Squad will go anywhere on Arrow even if a movie gets made.

"SUICIDE SQUAD" CAST REVEALED WITH JARED LETO AS JOKER (upper case in original):
  • Warner Bros. has revealed the core cast of its 2016 "Suicide Squad" film, with Jared Leto as Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Tom Hardy as Rick Flag, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang and Cara Delevigne as Enchantress. As previously reported, the film will be directed by David Ayer and produced by Charles Roven.

Variety also stated that "Batman v Superman" star Jesse Eisenberg is "also in talks" to reprise his role as Lex Luthor for "Suicide Squad"; and the role of Amanda Waller has yet to be cast -- though Warner Bros. is reportedly considering Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey, with the latter said to be the studio's top choice.

Leto's a good actor but I think bringing the Joker back in an ensemble is kind of a waste.

That being said, I think Will Smith as Deadshot could actually turn out to be pretty damn entertaining.

Deadshot has been played by a few different types, but I liked him best in the comics after the turn of the century when he had kind of a Charles Bronsan vibe.

Will Smith...I don't know. I have trouble taking him seriously even when he's trying to act serious. This ensemble kind of looks like another Green Lantern style DC bomb.

The Will Smith that starred in Ali, the Pursuit of Happyness and/or Six Degrees of Separation...even Fresh Prince. He can pull it off.

Will Smith can absolutely pull off Deadshot. Honestly I'm kind of looking forward to seeing him play a genuine villain character.

I'm not sure how well this is going to work. I'm afraid that this will be a "will smith-movie" instead of an ensemble movie this should be. Characters themselves really arent that well known to the "general public", apart from the Joker, to overshadow the actors. And while Leto and Hardy are big actors, Will Smith is bigger.
