Warcraft (Film) 2016

Does the story for this come specifically from the games? I've never played any of the games, and know nothing about the Warcraft world.

Yes it comes from the first Warcraft era, Humans vs Orcs. A lot of other stuff kinda smushed in I assume though, as the game itself is not exactly canon pristine.

There's been a lot of attention to detail that even if you messed around in the game for a week would be appreciated.

The characters do.
There was a lot of retconning between all the Warcraft games, books and comics, the majority of which affected Warcraft I and II, which is the time period in which this film take place.

Little is known about the actual plot of the movie, but the basic premise will probably be the following:

Orcs are a proud warrior race(think Klingons) from a world called Draenor, some of whom get corrupted by the Burning Legion(think Sauron) and tricked into opening a magical portal(think Stargate) to conquer a world called Azeroth(think Tolkien-ish Middle-Earth) which ultimately blows up Draenor(think Praxis), and some uncorrupted Orcs escape too... queue the movie.

The whole backstory to all that has over the years grown very extensive and it's anyone's guess how much and which bits they'll reference.

Leeroy Jenkins!

I was happy to see Dwarves & High Elves in the trailer. I think there might be Trolls? I haven't noticed them in the trailers but we those are the basic Eastern Kingdom races minus Gnomes which there seems to be an explanation why we don't see them do to lore.

I am hyped for this movie and hope it does well not only as a fan of Warcraft/WoW but better stories to come! Lich King?

I think it will be embarrassing and suck but also that I will love it.

I believe there is one gnome visible at some point in a crowd scene?

Draenor doesn't explode until Warcraft 2, which I believe will be after this movie.

It seems Orcs Vs Human mixed with Tides of Darkness? If there is a second film It will probably be Tides/Beyond the Dark Portal going into Reign of Chaos maybe mixed with Frozen Throne? Hopefully. Then Full Frozen Throne into World of Warcraft! Go into Burning Crusade!!! :D

Warcraft lore has been *such* a mess of conflicting silly retcons since Blizz decided to dump the fun RTS model.

Yeah and the last thing a movie needs is to have to do backflips to fit in with retcons.

I doubt there will be a second movie unless against all my expectations this is a huge hit. It would be cool though, I'd love to see the lich king story as a movie! That would work well and be a good story whether you'd played the game or not.

Warcraft does not have a gigantic budget, and I don't think anyone's expecting it to be a huge hit.
If it does moderately well($300k+), I could see a sequel getting greenlit.

Wow, I didn't realize they had relased all those clips.
I can't remember if this has been posted, but Titan books is doing a prequel novel, Durotan, focused on.... you can probably guess, and a novelization of the movie, both by Christie Golden. I wonder if any of the other characters will get novels?

I'm reading the book right now. It's quite good. Golden at her best unlike her Arthas book which has zero emotional impact and reads like a bunch of notes. I've noticed with Golden she starts off strong and then fizzles out as though she's lost all interest. It happened with VOY relaunch where she went from a nice romp to unreadable tripe and happened with her Warcraft books. Now she seems back on track.

Anyway, recommended! Quick read and very super orc-y :D

A new BTS video all about the effects.
I read an article on IGN a week or two ago where they were talking about the effects, and the writer thought the CGI effects and the physical stuff didn't really fit together very well, from a design point of view. I have to disagree though, from what I've seen in the clips and trailers, I think it looks fine together.
Warcraft: The Beginning? Is that an alternate title for non-US countries?

AGGHHH I just found out that Australia is getting the movie 5 days after the US, this kind of bullshit hasn't happened in years here :( and I won't be here when it does it come out, I am going to have to see it in Seoul. If I can't find it in english I'll just go see it in Korean, I am sure it will still be perfectly understandable

Apparently the release date is different in every country, form 25th of May to mid June. Huh. Well it's not like there's a spoilers issue. This will probably save me money as I might have seen it multiple times in Aus.

The first few reviews are emerging, and they're... not good. (Sorry, teacake! ;)) The critical tide could still turn, but the initial consensus is: too many characters, too little emotional investment.

When it comes to Warcraft, I'm from the old, Tides of Darkness-era "orcs are evil/murderous scum" school. I understand the games' treatment of the orcs has evolved since then, and that the movie matches that even-handedness, but I've been fearing that was a bad move. Star Wars (the '77 original) didn't try to give a balanced view of the Empire, nor did 300 have a positive take on its Persians. It might have been wiser to focus solely on human characters repelling an invasion, and neither show much of a positive side to the orcs nor rule out such a greater complexity in sequels. Going for complexity and even-handedness right out the gate, however, might be this movie's fatal flaw.

The game IS orcs these days so to do a movie with the orcs as hideous monsters would just not be the game. The human/orc enmeshment has been going on for a long time, the whole working together because of a greater evil being a recurring event.

I have never had high hopes for the movie but I do have high hopes for my enjoyment of seeing all those Azerothian details on screen. It's cool it finally got made after so many years. I will probably like it way more than it deserves
