Well, I've already offered my hypothesis for why he dumped Ironhorse and Norton and kept only the white characters. And I agree it was a thoroughly stupid idea. Ironhorse was a great character, superbly portrayed by Chaves. It hurt to watch his death scene -- not because I was caught up in the drama, but because I was so angry and bitter about it as a storytelling choice, both the decision to do it and the harsh, ugly, unsatisfying way it was executed. The whole thing was just so wrong.

How did Mancuso end up in charge anyway? Was the first season supposedly such a failure that they needed a total reworking like that?

(And I thought the Powers That Be demanding that the Earth Forces guys in the Excalibur needed "new uniforms" midseason -- with no explanation -- was stupid!)

I've only read the novel of the pilot-- just seen clips of the actual show. I wasn't too impressed. I'll watch it some day, when I sit down to write my book about War of the Worlds adaptations.

I thought that was it, but Wikipedia says the first season's ratings were very high. However, it doesn't offer any explanation for why the writing staff was replaced.
