War of the Supermen Discussion (Spoilers)

Just finished up reading issue two and man this series has pay offs...I just hope the conclusion is as good as the first two have been. General Lane and Lex's plan is revealed in the cliffhanger ending to issue two and it's a doozy.

How the hell are Clark and Kara going to get out of this one?

It's just about time for a timely intervention for someone from the Justice League. If Mon-El wasn't occupied already, I could see him helping out. And there's always the boom tube, someone might rescue them that way. But in any event, I thought it was a good cliffhanger. I liked how Robinson switched between Lane and Zod, general to general and how they were trying to counter or trump the other. This is definitely one of the best Superman stories I've read in a long time, a nice culmination to perhaps my second favorite Superman arc, after the death-rebirth-return cycle from the 90's.

Hopefully we'll get more Steel and learn about the fate of Natasha Irons in the third book. And we'll see how Earth's other heroes and villains are responding to the imminent invasion.

I bought the first two issues! Wish the art was better but the events are certainly momentous. I certainly didn't expect SPOILER to blow up in the very first issue!

I wish they had "borrowed" Gary Frank for this book...but he's busy working on "Batman Earth One" at the moment so I agree with Mr. Light regarding the art. I think we'll get the Natasha Irons plot touched on next week and I wouldn't be surprised if the Legion of Superheroes appeared in either the third or final issues. I believe that Robinson mentioned the Justice League won't be involved in this book...this is primarily a Superman event although I did also recall reading that both he and Geoff Johns said that the ramifications of this book would be felt across the DCU when it was over.

I liked the art in the issue #0 and #1 than in book #2. That being said, I'm not a major fan of Mr. Frank. The man's got talent for sure, but I think he makes Clark look too much like Christopher Reeve for my taste.

^ That's the whole point of the look...he DID base Clark off of Christopher Reeve, I believe this is what Geoff Johns instructed him to do.

I kinda wish they had shuffled schedules/assignments around and gotten Jamal Igle to draw the whole thing. In my opinion, he's the best of the current crop of Super-family artists.

Or maybe Mark Bagley, since TRINITY ended he's only doing JUSTICE LEAGUE, I'm sure he could have fit another four issues into his schedule. Dude is a machine!

My bad apparently according to the synopsis for issue three...as the solicitations for next week indicate that all of Earth's heroes will be involved attempt a last stand against the Kryptonians while Superboy and Steel attempt to expose General Lane. So perhaps the Justice League among others WILL be involved how involved we'll find out next week.

Well the heroes appearence seemed to be reduced to just a cameo as they fight off the restored Kandorian invasion. Flamebird sacrifices herself to reverse the effects of Lex's Red Sun while Superboy and his group find Natasha Irons and Jimmy Olsen sends a hack to his newsgroup who are known as "The Newsboy Legion" :) while a pissed off Superman stands defiant on the Daily Planet globe and Supergirl engages Ursa. The final battle and conclusion of this rather satisfying arc begins next week!

This has definitely been one of the better Superman story-lines. I'm looking forward to its conclusion.

Yep I've been surprisingly satisfied and am eager for the conclusion...I daresay that this will be more satisfying than The Return of Bruce Wayne but we're only one issue into that so far and being a Grant Morrison opus it takes time for things to develop and unfold.

I only buy the big summer events when they're released in trade and follow the wiki articles on the various storylines. Kind of a shoddy way of keeping track of things but hey it works. Like I said January seems a long time to wait perhaps the date will be pushed down...we can hope.

Chances are they want to release, in collected form, New Krypton Vol. 4 and The Last Stand of New Krypton first and have those a little spaced out.

Those are already listed on Amazon...just saw them yesterday. New Krypton Volume 4 seems to be coming out next month and The Last Stand of New Krypton in Nov.

Why did the rescue of Natasha happen off-screen? I thought there weren't any tie-in books to this since one is coming out every week.

They rescued her...she's shown standing with Jimmy and Superboy's gang. It's right before he sends his text message to the Newsboy Legion.

Really? Prior issues showed Lane getting along okay with Clark, in one of the "Krypton Man" stories he even had a nice cruise with Ma and Pa Kent.

Check again, that wasn't Lane, that was Perry and Alice White who were on the cruise with Ma and Pa Kent. Around this time, Perry and Alice were having marital problems and the cruise was a way for them to spend some time together and work on it. If I recall, it wasn't planned that they would spend their time with the Kents, just happenstance.

He was pretty harsh to Clark and Superman during the Worlds At War storyline...I'm assuming his experience during the conflict against Imperlix set him off in his xenophobia and cemented his recruitment in Project 7734.

He liked Clark in the earlier stories. Since they brought him back as a Thunderbolt Ross clone he stated that he always disliked Clark for "taking Lois away from him", which is bizarre because in the newly retconned history he and Lois never seemed to care for each other that much.

Check out the Wedding issue. Sam Lane there is not happy about Clark marrying Lois. I think there was even a fear on Lois' part that he wouldn't attend, especially after an issue at the tux fitting.

Personally, I think it's just outside his ability to comprehend why Lois wouldn't follow in his footsteps. Clark just provided a nice target for his frustration, someone to "blame" for taking Lois away, instead of accepting his daughter just did not want what he wanted for her.

They rescued her...she's shown standing with Jimmy and Superboy's gang. It's right before he sends his text message to the Newsboy Legion.

Yes, it is clear that they rescued her, but their assault on Project 7734's Mount Rushmore facility is mostly handled off-"screen," which also disappointed me. I understand it's supposed to be fast paced, but it's a shame that such pivitol supporting cast members are basically shown standing around in all of the issues.

^ I'm suspecting that we'll get the fall out of their assault and rescue of 'Tasha after the mini-series has concluded in the regular Superman books. Sam raised his girls like sons because he always wanted a son and never got one...it's one of his driving motivations and why Lucy joined the military and then later on transformed into Superwoman. The Lane's have a pretty dysfunctional family dynamic.
