War of the Supermen Discussion (Spoilers)

I picked up War of the Supermen#1 today and just finished reading it and as I suspected New Krypton was destroyed but didn't think it would happen so early. Superman and Kara are once again alone as Kara witnesses the death of her mother as Lara seals her in a radiation projection room as a bomb lodged within Reactron implanted by Luthor goes off which causes the destruction of the planet. Superman searches through the remains of the planet to find Kara crying in a ball floating in space while General Zod's vast armada is on approach to Earth. I believe this is a four week event which each of the four issues being released each week in May. Also Lois and Jimmy Olsen gather Superman's allies to take down General Lane.

Anyone else read this today? What are your thoughts on it?

I do not regulary read any comics or should I say I do not subscribe. I do try to keep up with what's going on and do buy the comics when I see one that is interesting. Superman is my favorite, so I do keep up with the stories as much as possible. All that bieng said, I absolutely hate the New Krypton and New Kryptonian story line. One reason why I don't like to buy comics lately is because the story lines last too long and it's hard to keep up. I just want to Supes kick some ass and have good writing. Sometimes it gets too jumbled. Now that you have mentioned it, I will check it out though.

I picked this up today but haven't read it yet. I don't generally read DC, but the FCBD preview was intriguing enough for me to give it a try.

Hopefully this will end with all of the other Kryptonians dead. Superman SHOULD be the sole survivor, even Supergirl is pushing it.

^ This seems to be the direction they're going in by the end of this event I predict that Superman, Supergirl, and Superboy will be the only Kryptonians left with Zod and his two companions either sent back to the Phantom Zone or killed.

I liked the New Krypton arc for the most part. It shook up Superman's universe. If one major thing about him is that he was the sole, or one of the very few Kryptonians left, I thought it opened up a lot of new territory to explore how he would deal with thousands or maybe hundreds of thousands of Kryptonians. I also think the arc has done a great deal to really legitimize Zod as a villain in print. Up to date, his best showing was Superman 2. I don't care for what Smallville has done with Zod-LexZod and now Major Zod, eh. (Though at least they understand on some level his potential as a great adversary).

I've been reading the NK arc off and on. Picked up WOS #0 and I really liked it. I'm not a big fan of James Robinson, but I got issue #1 and I thought it was pretty intense. I didn't expect them to destroy New Krypton and especially not in the first issue. Nor was I expecting Kara's mom to bite the dust, and I thought that was well done and redemptive for her. With this being a four issue arc, I got a good feeling that it won't spin out of control like Blackest Night, Batman RIP, or Final Crisis. Superman hasn't been this exciting for me for quite some time.

DC has stated that War of the Supermen is self contained but will still have recuperations for the rest of the DCU as well as the Superman status quo...similar to what I guess Morrison is planning for The Return of Bruce Wayne arc. I've enjoyed what Geoff Johns started and the other writers, James Robinson and Greg Ruka, have carried on with since the opening "Last Son" story arc. Prior to that I hadn't really picked up a Superman comic since the late 90's early 2000's. I've been mostly collecting the Hardcover trades as they're released but have picked up the odd issue as I did so yesterday.

I wait for the trade but I'm looking forward to it! I did read the Free Comic Day issue. So I'm only up to New Krypton Vol. 3 trade. Though I really feel since Geoff Johns left the title it's just not written as well (I've only read the trades so that doesn't include the regular mags just "Superman New Krypton" limited series).

Though I admit it was rather jarring for them to turn General Lane into the Superman version of General Ross.

Maybe whatever kryptonians survive this storyline will immigrate to Daxam. In a thousand years or so it could lead the Daxam race to overcoming their lead vulnerability.

Hopefully this will end with all of the other Kryptonians dead. Superman SHOULD be the sole survivor, even Supergirl is pushing it.

I couldn't agree more. And I have the same problem with all the Robins they ended up having. And even the multiple "Green Lanterns" of Earth (Hal--John--Kyle--Guy) is getting out of hand...

Rob

I have no problem with their being multiple versions of the character...and Mr. Light I saw on amazon that "The War of the Supermen" is scheduled for publishing in Jan 2011. That seems like a long wait for something that's being published in one month and could be out in November or December but oh well.

I think multiple characters with the same name, and powers, destroy the uniqueness of the first character. Superman's "Last survivor of Krypton" mantra was, I think, ruined by Supergirl..Krypto...Kara...and the Phantom Zone villians..ect.

I agree.

Unless you're talking about Ms. Marvel, in which case you're WRONG! :p

Well, okay, she doesn't have the same powers as Marv anymore and she's changed her outfit to look completely different to his.

I also give a 'free pass' to power girl since, well, her breasts are so well drawn. My left wrist, to this day, has tendonitis because of her!!!

To me, to be honest, even Wonder Woman is a more interesting character than her for that very reason. Most comic book females have big breasts but that seems to be all there is to the character.
