WANTED - non-Trek space ships builders

hlbimages

Ensign
Newbie
I need ships, and lots of them.

Let me introduce who I am and what this is all for. My name is Hieu Le Bui and I am an artist and also creator of a comic book series that is 99.9% accepted by a major publishing company. I am co-writing it with a known writer that at this time I cannot name and so is the name of the comic. The world of this comic series is a cross between Superman and Battlestar Galactica. So I need lots and lots of ships. The art and scripting on in development stages right now and I have little time to built ships myself in MAX. Therefore I am putting out a call for ship builders out there that can build for me several classes of ships for this world.

Here’s what I need. There are two races, one is human the other an alien race that is a cross between Cylons(BSG) and Replicators(Stargate). It is set in the 26th century. So go advance as you can with the models.

I need on the human side multiple heavily structure warship classes like the ones in Babylon 5 but they need to be wider, has rotating firing system on both sides with laser canons mounted somewhere on top. Also half a dozen of opening bays for fighters to enter and exit the ship. The engines are semi-rocket and warp like in Star Trek so choose the latter. I also need a small one man fighter class that has similar shape of the Cylon raiders but reverse engineer it to look human with a viewable cockpit. Be sure to add the little details as much as you can.

The alien race I only need one type of warship class. I have no preference for what it could looks like just that it need to look alien. I also need a fighter class too but unman. Everything about the alien race can totally be up to you. Be sure to add the little details as much as you can.

Here is a picture of what kind of comic and art this book will have. The reason that I need 3d models of ships is because I want to not think about drawing it from my imagination but actually pose it and importing the image into Photoshop and tracing it to fit the style of the comic. This is an open call that I’ll leave it open till the end of December if I don't get enough submissions. So tell your friends and neighbors about this.

Please when you finished a model, take a gray scale picture of your model and post it here in this thread. All models do not need to be colored or textured. Just plain old one color will do. Gray if you can do it that way. If you have time to textured and colored it then great and post them. I will however need the model to be exported as a file as some kind of a simple format where I can import them into 3D MAX later. Submit as many models as you like there are no limits. If chosen your name will be listed in the credits as one of the contributors to the project. This is a non-paying job but like I said you'll get credits and exposures.

Thank you.

Don't have any ship designs to offer, but i did want to compliment your artwork. I really like the realistic style you have there.

Hope you'll give us a heads up when this title your working on gets published.

So you get paid by the major publishing company, and the person building all the spaceships gets squat?

Is your cover really going to be a line drawing of Kirsten Dunst?

Let's see, you want "non-Trek space ships builders" but you're advertising in the Trek Art forum, and anything we submit will be over-traced by you with a payment of exactly zero dollars and zero cents?

Wow, what an opportunity! Where do I sign up?!

I commend you on your chutzpah, hlbimages, if not your advertising skills.

well "biotech" and "Professor Moriarty". If you don't want to get your name published then don't do it. No need to get nasty about it. What do you want? 50% of the profit? This is a chance for people to get in on a project that is going to be published. If it goes beyond that don't you think there would be some kind of a profits sharing? What is it that you guys get to gain from doing fan art of trek in 3d or not anyway? I’m offering a way to create and get your name published. I am not going to take credit for something I didn’t create.

You think that is Kirsten Dunst?

Well thank you sir, you are one of those civilized Trek people I heard so much about. :)

I'm not being nasty, I'm just pretty sure when you open a comic and read all the names of the people on the first page, the ones who contribute to the comic, all those people got paid.

You thought my reply was nasty? Trust me, that reply was licked on by kittens compared to the reception you would get if you posted an "offer" like this in one of the professional CGI art forums. Most artists consider their time and effort to be of value--a promise to say "hey thanks for giving me something to trace!" isn't merely inadequate, it's insulting.

I don't want anything... I'm just amazed that you honestly believe that artists of the caliber required to have their work published at a "major publisher" would be willing to work gratis.

No, I don't--and frankly, your response only increases the sweep of the needle on my B.S. detector. I have never heard of a comic book publisher entering into a profit-sharing arrangement on a comic book's sales with the author--especially an aspiring first-time author like you seem to be. So unless you're planning on sharing the fee you would be paid by this unnamed publisher, and unless that fee sharing with your spaceship artist is negotiated up-front, then no, I don't expect that anyone who takes you up on your offer will see one thin dime.

But hey, if you are able to find someone dumb enough to take you up on your offer, knock yourself out. Anyone who enters into an agreement with a total stranger where payment terms aren't agreed to in advance and in writing deserves what they get.

I have to say I agree that you guys overstepped the mark with the tone of your posts. The guy is offering potential credit for designing a couple of ships, not a 50-50 partnership in a top publication. This is a hobbyist forum, not a pro-CGI one, and there are plenty of people who would do the work just for the potential of seeing their design being used in print. He's not a fanboy with a crude pencil sketch of a 6-mile long ubership on lined paper demanding we spend months making and animating his useless design, just a guy making a reasonable request. I've done paid TV work in the past, but I also help out guys like this for the fun of it when I can. Lighten up guys, its not the end of the world.

Pretty much, considering it looks almost identicle to one of the Mary Jane poses from the film, and even the most rudimentry search on your user name on google comes up with even more art on other boards where you have a lot more drawings of someone who looks just like Kirsten Dunst, and pictures of spiderman/Venem.

Just because we are a star trek board dosnt mean we dont go see other films.

**shrugs** I guess it's just me then... I don't consider asking someone to come up with multiple starship models for free a reasonable request. Backing out now...

Gosh, since you have ripped off other artwork by tracing it, why stop now?

Attempt your own artwork, and don't bother us real artists with lame requests for us to do YOUR work for you so you can trace it and take credit for it by getting paid/published. You must think people are pretty stupid!

Guess what? If you can't draw your own artwork, or hire someone else to do it, you have NOTHING - a comic IS the art! Perhaps you should get your 99.9% invested publisher to hire you an art department for this killer comic you think you have, hahaha.

Oh gee, no budget? What a shocker!
