want to feel old?

What historical DMZ are we talking about anyway? Korea? Iraq/Saudi Arabia? It's definitely not part of any standard College Western Civ class and wasn't taught in any high school US or World history classes that I can think of. I think the term is fairly common sense, but that's it.

When I hear “DMZ,” the first thing that comes to mind is the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. That's the one that was most frequently in the news when I was growing up.

I never knew until just now that it's also a term that applies to computer networks.

Which was when? I'm trying to get a frame of reference. I've never had a history class that discussed anything post-WWII.

There's an awkward historical period between WWII and my birth in 1985 where I have absolutely no idea what was going on.

Tell me, you are one year older than a friend of mine. This guy does not wear his seat belt when driving, always stares at his blackberry while driving, texting and surfing the internet (yeah, while driving), and all the time, accuses me of being a relic of the 20th century because I want him to occasionally put his phone down and interact with, you know, people. He doesn't understand why I won't send him text messages while we're having lunch, when we are right across the table from each other!!:scream: He keeps saying I need to "join the 21st century". Are his attitudes common among people your age?

No. I was born in 1983 and that's not common. It's called being a douche and it happens in every generation. Technology can just makes it more obvious.

I was born in '87 and I don't even do that! 'Bout the only thing I will do, which is a hefty ticket if I get caught, is talk on the phone, and even then that less than a minute if someone called me.

Do you use your call waiting to put one person on hold when another person calls you? Then switch back and forth between calls? The friend I described above does this too. I swear, if he didn't have his phone, he'd be lost--which he is, most of the time, anyway.

1960s and early ’70s. I should add that the DMZ between the North and South of then-divided Vietnam was quite often in the news as well.

I'm realy behind the times, I hardly know how to do that no mater what phone I'm on. I never put anyone on hold anyway.

It's a little scary, though. The next generation will probably be using computers before they know how to use the toilet.

My two year old can operate the DVD player and the computer, but refuses to use the potty.

Get that kid one of those fancy, high tech Japanese toilets. Make for happy poopie time. ;)

That is an awesome idea. I wonder if my husband will go for it, though; I bet they're not cheap!

It's what we call our staging area at work, where we copy code prior to it being deployed on our live servers. I'm not familiar with any way that we use it related to the official IT-related definition (I did just look it up, and it makes me wonder why we use the term for our staging folder.)

Nah, you're OK. The reason it was called the Cold War is that everyone went into cryostasis for a while.

This. I was born in late 1982. Same thing. Some people are just tools. That being said, I have texted across the table before, but that's because we were in a meeting and the subject being discussed did not pertain to us at all. It seemed more polite than starting up our own conversation. Also, all that crap he does while driving elevates him to the highest level of douchiness. He has made the conscious decision that his time is more valuable than other people's lives.
