Sorry, I was referring to the possible typo of the president who freed the slaves rather than defeating them. I still have no idea whom he actually meant.

I hated how they totally whitewashed this vicious chapter of Lincoln's presidency in The Savage Curtain.

Well, since you didn't stipulate that this fleet would be for military operations, I'll just pick my favorite classes. You should've asked us what we'd name the ships, too.

• USS Foxfire, Defiant class
• USS Resolute, Excelsior class, Lakota variant
• USS Julian (after Percy Julian), John Eaves' "Pufferfish Class" (see second drawing at http://johneaves.wordpress.com/2009/04/09/the-holo-ships-of-insurrection/), but as a small science vessel
• USS Columbia, John Eaves' "the other whatever it is class" (see second drawing at http://johneaves.wordpress.com/2009/03/25/the-early-nx-01/), as a much-nicer-looking, re-imagined version of the refit Constitution, lovingly maintained by the cadets at Starfleet Academy
• USS Vigilant, another John Eaves design (see http://johneaves.wordpress.com/2009/03/25/starship-of-the-day-2/), as a long-range scout

The Intrepid class makes for excellent target practice. Seven years of Voyager taught me this.

The Intrepid class is harder to hit with those Nacelles flapping up and down all the time.

Well that's silly.. surely u'd want the best ships..

like 5 Cubes or whatever.. or a Dyson Sphere..

Isn't that kind of like saying "If you had five cars, surely you'd want them all to be the same"? Whereas there's really no single best car in all circumstances ... you'd be better off with five different ones for different situations (sustained highway driving, hauling heavy loads, getting around congested city streets, etc.).

Is the Vanessa named after anyone in particular?

It's named after HMS Vanessa, affectionately known to her crew as the Naughty Nessa, a 26-gun frigate in my last novel, which was by coincidence the name of her captain's mother, Mrs. Vanessa (Quinn) Mason, who had passed away in the previous novel. Enchanted is also named for one of the ships in that novel. Valiant, Ark Royal and Fearless were to make appearances later in the series.

Send these ships through the wormhole into the Gamma Quadrant and then make them fly back to Federation space on warp power and try to map everything in between.
