Walmart and Trek

RAMA

When I peek in on Walmart's Star Trek inventory, I almost never see them carry anything. This is contrary to what I often see posted here on this BBS...people find rare toys, all sorts of DVDs and blurays. There are NO MODELS here. NO TV series blurays. Never any STNG sets. So how many of you find a gold mine of ST collectibles at your local Walmart?

Target always carries the STNG season sets here.

RAMA

Not sure about toys or models, but I know when I lived in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area the Walmarts there usually had a pretty decent selection of DVD's. To be honest, I haven't really looked here in the Tampa Bay area, so I don't know.

Mine (Ft. Wright, Ky.) usually has a decent Trek disc selection. I bought my Into Darkness soundtrack there.

Wasn't aware people found Trek goldmines at Wal-Mart. Certainly my local Wal-Mart has shit all when it comes to Trek stuff. They might have STID on DVD and Blu-ray, but I'm pretty sure that's it.

Then again, I only go into Wal-Mart to buy razor blades (they have exclusive 12-packs).

If I remember this subject correctly from other threads, Walmart stores are independent, at least to some degree, as far as stocking individual stores.
I don't mind admitting that I shop at Walmart and in the several I visit in my area, none have any Star Trek books, there are the occasional models to be found, but fewer toys; however, DVDs seem to be readily available.
I have ordered books through Walmart online though; if you're into that, check into their online sight.

ME

Aside from when a new movie comes out the ones around me usually have squat. The "coolest" thing I found in one was the Animated series for $15 a few years ago. I have to go to hobby shops if I want a model, or a comic book store for most everything else.

Sadly, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, to report here in Abu Dhabi...but my real home of suburban Chicago yields no Star Trek gold mine at Wal-Mart either...Target sometimes...best seems to be on-line...

Many, if not most Wal-Marts dropped their admittedly meager assembly model kit sections several years ago when they restructured their stores company wide. So one can't even find car kits which has always been a bulk of that industry. If a store had any sci-fi ships, they were invariably Star Wars, not Star Trek.

Sincerely,

Bill

The local Empire Mart hadn't been carrying much of anything once everything was long-released on DVD, but in 2009 they resumed carrying the full season of TOS, plus a few random seasons of TNG and VOY. So If I wanted season 7 of TNG or season 4 of VOY, I could get them, but was SOL otherwise. I haven't seen Trek books in stock since Deep Space Nine was on the air; the last book I got there was DS9 #22, "Vengeance". I haven't looked in the toy section for action figures, since it has been a great many years since I was old enough to play with them, and I've only recently been old enough to plausibly be a parent looking for toys for my kids.

I don't shop at Wal-Mart unless I absolutely have to. The ONLY thing that got me to go was that they carried the novels - for about $3.50 less than the cover price which is even cheaper than the pre-order price on Amazon. Then about 3 years ago they stopped (at least at the one near me). Now I have no reason to go.

I did peruse the toy section when the last two movies came out. Never saw any Trek merchandise. As a matter of fact, the last time I even recall seeing anything Trek at Wal-Mart was maybe 15 years ago. They had a few of the Playmates toys and figures. They let those dwindle away, never restocking, until there was a single row of The Traveller figures (seems like no one wanted that one).

Walmarts are so disorganized and poorly stocked that I find shopping for toys of any franchise to be depressing.

Might be that Star Trek is actually popular in your area, so the Walmart stays sold out? The inverse is actually one of the few benefits for me of living in rural South Carolina - not many nerds around here, so I find lots of stuff at my local Walmart and Toys R Us that people complain sells out immediately elsewhere. If I had had the free cash for the upfront investment, I could have made a killing reselling Star Wars toys through eBay back when they came out for Episode I. As it is, I'm probably happier I didn't, anyway - I personally prefer that toys go to people who actually want to play with them than to collectors that want to keep them MIB.

...perhaps you have found the button on the console that could lead to a lucrative business arrangement and some hard-to-come-by GPL...remembering Rule 9 of the "Rules of Acquisition, " Opportunity Plus Instinct Equals Profit", perhaps a mutually profitable partnership between you and a colleague, whereby capital is supplied and product is made available to needy sectors!... ;)

I never find anything at my local Walmart. But, I remember back in the day when they used to carry stuff...
