the commercial I saw this morning for this had a line in it about robots putting "parts" back on and it remined me of the War Amps "Play Safe Campain" were they used ASTAR a robot. to warn kids to play safely.I'll be honest, I never even made the Johnny 5 connection until you posted this thread. I still haven't seen the trailer for WALL•E, but it sounds like an interesting concept, so I'll probably buy a ticket. The gang at Pixar have yet to produce a film that I'd give less than three stars.
It has nothing to do with the Short Circuit storyline. This was the last movie conceived of with the original staff at Pixar. If you've even seen the new trailer you know it's nothing like SC I OR II.

I believe people are merely pointing out the similarity between the two characters, not the plot of the movie.
Just to clarify, I never said anything about ripping off the plot of SC. I was merely saying the design of the robot was a rip-off.
Indeed the teaser trailer I saw didn't even provide any plot details, it was merely WALL-E acting about for 20 seconds

I don't see how the design is a "rip-off", an "homage" is more likely but to me I'm going with "vaugely similar." In that both have similar-looking tire tracks for mobility and maybe, verrrrrrrry slightly similar heads.
That aside I just do not see the appeal of this movie. AT. ALL.
Didn't we have this thread a couple months ago?

Yes, I started one. And I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees the resemblance...!![]()

Because if we allow this type of obviously deliberate ripping off to occur, then the terrorists win.

I disagree and so did the couple next to me and being adults didn't matter as those gushing over Wall*E are also adults. The same hugely dominated adult audience at Indy 4 laughed loudly at Kung Fu Panda and got narry a chuckle out of Wall*E. Its best laugh was when the shopping carts hit him and then the door automatic door opens. That aside I just do not see the appeal of this movie. AT. ALL.
Really? In terms of premise, I think it's one of the most interesting concepts ever done for a Pixar film. And it has, hands-down, the best trailer for any film in the summer.
I don't disagree the potential is there its just the trailers aren't selling me on it. Your examples are spot on but thus far Wall*E and his execution via trailers gets a big FAIL from me.Wall-E, as a character, has the potential to be just as lovable as R2-D2 or ET. The absence of a talking protagonist, while atypical, could be a strength. Kids like silent (or monosyllabic) animated characters if what they do is sufficiently interesting. To name but one example, the duo of Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner. It puts the onus of characterisation entirely on the animation, and I think Pixar can deliver.
And Pixar isn't doing their usual shtick? I see a story at least in Panda, where is the story in Wall*E??? The one I discern from the trailer is so thin to as not be interesting.Kung Fu Panda, by contrast... looks like DreamsWorks doing their usual Shrek shtick. You have your well known comic in animated form, you have your hip references, and you have a product as bland as it is uninteresting. It's a safe, unremarkable formula. Probably will make a lot of money, but I'm certainly passing.
Its a visual success I'll say that now. Its execution to date on selling me though is FAIL. If I'm like others than it may be EPIC FAIL. We willl know soon enough. They have time to issue a second trailer that can change minds. So, if Wall-E is a failure either financially or critically, I don't think it will be a failing with the premise, but rather the execution.
It's got eyes and treads. Clearly a rip-off.
