Wall-E, wtf? Poor mans Johnny 5

Is there some kind of bandwidth shortage I'm unaware of? Who gives a crap how many threads there are about this, cripes.

I'll be honest, I never even made the Johnny 5 connection until you posted this thread. I still haven't seen the trailer for WALL•E, but it sounds like an interesting concept, so I'll probably buy a ticket. The gang at Pixar have yet to produce a film that I'd give less than three stars.
the commercial I saw this morning for this had a line in it about robots putting "parts" back on and it remined me of the War Amps "Play Safe Campain" were they used ASTAR a robot. to warn kids to play safely.

but I also saw the resemblance to Johnny5.

It has nothing to do with the Short Circuit storyline. This was the last movie conceived of with the original staff at Pixar. If you've even seen the new trailer you know it's nothing like SC I OR II.

I believe people are merely pointing out the similarity between the two characters, not the plot of the movie.

Some of you surprise me. When I first saw the trailers for Wall-E, the first thing I thought of was Short Circuit. Then again, I bought SS for my son, for Christmas, so it was a bit fresh on my mind.

I was responding to the one post about ripping off the story for SC. Should have quoted it. Sorry about that.

Just to clarify, I never said anything about ripping off the plot of SC. I was merely saying the design of the robot was a rip-off.
Indeed the teaser trailer I saw didn't even provide any plot details, it was merely WALL-E acting about for 20 seconds

I don't see how the design is a "rip-off", an "homage" is more likely but to me I'm going with "vaugely similar." In that both have similar-looking tire tracks for mobility and maybe, verrrrrrrry slightly similar heads.

Other than the fact he's got two eyes, even the head is completely different.

If that little bastard had wheels instead of pyramidal tank treads this thread wouldn't exist. And even then, the treads are different from the side and rear.

The two designs are nothing alike. The way they move, express themselves, their arms, necks, bodies, eyes, it's all totally different. I've already posed one analogy, another would be that of a hummingbird and a turkey vulture. "They b0th got wingz!"

I made the Johnny 5 connection the 2nd or 3rd time I saw a poster or image of the guy. It wasn't until our first thread here that I realized it must be really obvious, many media savy people have made the connection across the 'net.

That aside I just do not see the appeal of this movie. AT. ALL.
I like Pixar I just think they may be taking the audience for granted. This could be their The Village. The bot must get off Earth early so we can get to a large stretch of movie where he is around characters with a vocabulary beyond Waaaaalll*E

Also having seen the trailer now 3 times for Kung Fu Panda and hearing the audience reaction I hearby change my mind that this Dreamworks pic is a $200M contender. If movies were not $10 a pop I might consider seeing it that is how won over I was by the trailer.

Wall*E though does not grab me. It did not humor me. Beyond Pixar loyalists I have yet to see something that makes this movie appealing enough for kids, heck adults to want to rush out and see or take their kids to.

Really? In terms of premise, I think it's one of the most interesting concepts ever done for a Pixar film. And it has, hands-down, the best trailer for any film in the summer.

Wall-E, as a character, has the potential to be just as lovable as R2-D2 or ET. The absence of a talking protagonist, while atypical, could be a strength. Kids like silent (or monosyllabic) animated characters if what they do is sufficiently interesting. To name but one example, the duo of Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner. It puts the onus of characterisation entirely on the animation, and I think Pixar can deliver.

Kung Fu Panda, by contrast... looks like DreamsWorks doing their usual Shrek shtick. You have your well known comic in animated form, you have your hip references, and you have a product as bland as it is uninteresting. It's a safe, unremarkable formula. Probably will make a lot of money, but I'm certainly passing.

So, if Wall-E is a failure either financially or critically, I don't think it will be a failing with the premise, but rather the execution.

I disagree and so did the couple next to me and being adults didn't matter as those gushing over Wall*E are also adults. The same hugely dominated adult audience at Indy 4 laughed loudly at Kung Fu Panda and got narry a chuckle out of Wall*E. Its best laugh was when the shopping carts hit him and then the door automatic door opens.

I don't disagree the potential is there its just the trailers aren't selling me on it. Your examples are spot on but thus far Wall*E and his execution via trailers gets a big FAIL from me.

And Pixar isn't doing their usual shtick? I see a story at least in Panda, where is the story in Wall*E??? The one I discern from the trailer is so thin to as not be interesting.
Humans advance.
Create robots to do everything.
Earth becomes a big suck hole, humans leave.
Wall*E is there to clean.
Meets Eve, leaves Earth.
Becomes a type of fugitive on a space station, but why?
Why, why, why do I care about this?

I don't so I'll pass.

Its a visual success I'll say that now. Its execution to date on selling me though is FAIL. If I'm like others than it may be EPIC FAIL. We willl know soon enough. They have time to issue a second trailer that can change minds.
