Wall-E, wtf? Poor mans Johnny 5

So I can't say I really follow or care about these Disney Pixar films. I think I may have seen a picture of WALL-E before but probably just didn't take any notice of it.
Anyway, one of the trailers/teasers shown when I saw Indy IV yesterday was for this new film WALL-E. And I have to say if I'd been drinking tea at the time I would have spat it out sitcom-style.

What the fuck? Is this just a major rip-off of 80's classic movies Short Circuit 1 & 2 or what?

This evil scum, WALL-E

And our good friend, Johnny 5

It's exactly the friggin same! Just squashed down!
Those lazy Hollywood corporate hacks. I'm gonna send the "bad" Johnny 5 from Short Circuit 2 to sort them out!

 Don't worry, I'm not that mad, this is a fairly tongue in cheek response, and to be fair I know nothing about WALL-E other than it’s yet another CGI Pixar film. But still I think I'll overreact anyway and get the torches ready to burn down whoever was responsible for this vile act of blasphemy ;)
Seriously though I did think it looked a super rip-off.

Anyone else think that? Thoughts?

I'll be honest, I never even made the Johnny 5 connection until you posted this thread. I still haven't seen the trailer for WALL•E, but it sounds like an interesting concept, so I'll probably buy a ticket. The gang at Pixar have yet to produce a film that I'd give less than three stars.

Didn't we have this thread a couple months ago?
Yes, we did. And I think "we" concluded that while there were similarities, WALL-E isn't really a rip off of Johnny 5.
Hm. I don't remember pictures that time around, but maybe there were links and I was too lazy to click on them. I do see the similarity; but I don't think it's all that significant. I guess people who have seen Short Circuit can tell us how similar in plot it is (or dissimilar) when Wall-E premieres.

More the rich man's Johnny 5 but there is some resemblance there. Ripoff or homage? I guess depends on how much you want to see this...

^^ I'm sure even in adjusted dollars Wall-E would outrank Short Circuit's budget is all I'm saying, quality notwithstanding.

^ Sorry, maybe you misunderstand my use of the term "poor mans"
It doesn't literally have to do with monetary value, but more of the value one would place on something.
ie One could say the Mummy films are are a poor mans Indiana Jones.
Paul Ross is a poor mans Jonathan Ross.
Alien Resurrection is a poor mans Aliens.
Charmed is a poor mans Buffy
etc

Basically just two things that are vaugely connected, and what you don't prefer is therefore the poor mans version of the other...
Just a term my friends and I use all the time to describe something we don't like. Mention said thing, think of something similar but better, and say A is a poor mans B :D

First of all, the similarities between the two are minor, and the differences are far more numerous. It's like saying a Land Rover and a Toyota Camry look similar because they both have four wheels and four doors. When you see Wall-E in motion he's completely different from J5. Heck, he's a little trash compactor.

And I certainly don't think the movies are going to be similar story-wise, the descriptions I've read sound completely different. Night and day. And Wall-E doesn't even talk, whereas Johnny 5 can't STFU for more than 5 seconds.

As far as this movie goes, everything Pixar does is brilliant and I don't expect this movie to be any different.

Dude, I was ten years old and even I got a creepy vibe from that scene.

And I was the kid who watched that movie three times in a row on VHS when it came out. Might be why I have a fetish for machine porn.

Possibly. I just watched Short Circuit a couple of weeks ago and didn't get that "vibe" in the scene, certainly didn't get it as a kid.

I know, just a dumb comment, I think we're both on the same page. :)

I happened to catch a glimpse of the poster for this a couple of days ago, and my first, and only reaction was WTF, another Short Circuit?

Well, they are apparently remaking Short Circuit. But I never even thought of the similarity between them until the thread a few weeks back.
OK, Hollywood is truly bankrupt. Why izzit those asshats feel the need to remake *EVERYTHING*?
