'Walking with Dinosaurs'

My son and partner went to see this a couple years ago when it was in Australia. They absolutely loved it! :)

Thanks so much, everybody! I knew my fellow BBS geeksters wouldn't let me down. Now I just need to decide before Monday how much money I'm willing to spend. ToddKent, yes, I would love to hear more - I'll PM you.

wow! how did they make the raptors move without the mechanical floor supports that the larger dinosaur have? are there people controling them inside?

the dinos look pretty cool, but, uh, the sets are a bit sci-fi b-movieish looking...

Supposedly some of them are radio controlled and others by people inside. But that's about all I know.

^ Well, I'm kind of excited now...although I am having problems finding somebody to go with me. Dinosaurs. BIG ones. In a sports arena. Who wouldn't love that?

It's here at the Target Center in Minneapolis May 14-17. I may take the family if it is that good.

They use both giant Muppet-like puppets and radio-controlled robots to simulate how dinosaurs actually looked and moved. Or so they say.

Do you suspect they may be using real dinosaurs, bred and kept in captivitity, and forced to perform? Because that would just be wrong!

It looks awesome. Hope it comes to the UK.

I'll go with you, Kate! Oh, wait...:(

A gal can dream, can't she?

But actually, I didn't intend my "or so they say" to indicate disbelief about how the dinosaurs were controlled but rather to indicate a little doubt about the "how dinosaurs actually looked and moved" part.

They could eliminate all these problems by just breeding dinosaurs, of course. I know - we could extract the DNA from amber, and then clone them and put them on an island...Grand fun for the entire family!

Yeah. :( This is why we need transporter technology, like, yesterday. Because I'd love to have a beer with some of you guys.

I saw a schedule for UK shows when I was looking for the US one.

I watched a few video clips on the website... VERY impressive! At first it's like "ok, these are puppets"... but they do seem to have realistic movement, which is key. It would be like paying a visit to the Jurassic Park movie set.

You sit in seats, but the dinosaurs do come up to the seating edge. I wonder how they produced the show? Is it a story? Documentary? Or just 15 dinosaurs trotting onto the stage at different times and "interacting" with each other? It looks like the venue is around 2 hours, about above average movie length. If it was close by, I'd definitely go.

There is a "paleontologist" narrator guy who moves the show forward. It's essentially like a live version of the BBC WWD documentary.

It's about 1 1/2 to 2 hours with an intermission about halfway through.
