WAHOO - FOUND THE SHIP - i think...

Kirstie Alley was 30 when she played Lt. Saavick. So, it would make more sense for Kirk to be in his late-twenties at least when he takes the KM test. Also, McCoy may very well have been a practicing M.D. when he joined the service (as others have said). IMO, it makes perfect sense for McCoy, Kirk, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov to be at the academy at the same time. Uhura and Sulu would be senior cadets (22ish in age?), Chekov would be a junior cadet(18ish), Kirk would be a full Lt. (at least) who is back at the academy for his command training (aged 26-30?), and McCoy would be a doctor in his mid-thirties who has joined the fleet as an officer and is completing his required training.
Your explanation makes perfect sense. I wonder why most Trekkies are such idiots that they cannot think of such ideas.

^ I like this explanation too. Hopefully the script has something about this plausible, because here it wouldnt' be just a contradiction of Star Trek canon, but a contradiction of the internal logic of the film itself.

Yeah, I don't mind at all the idea that Kirk is back at the Academy for something similar to PCO (Prospective Commanding Officer) School. He could run into the rest of the crew and like them so much that he hand picks them for his command staff somehow.

Spock and Scotty, of course, being the two most senior officers besides Kirk, must already be established officers or it doesn't work.

Now I know why I think I see the Enterprise in the original shot below:

It is because it reminded me of something I had seen in TREK before and could not place. It reminds me of this shot in ST5 somewhat:

and to a certain extent, this shot form ST:TMP -

Darn, ive just posted this in 'New Pics' thread without seeing this. Now ilook like an idiot.

*Goes to edit reply before anyone reads it*

Good image though, McCoys face is like that of a child on a field trip looking out of the window. So the best guess its something cool.

Unless someone on the film the crew is dressed as Legolas with a Dwarf on his shoulders.

Doubt they are cadet uniforms, McCoy would already be well into his first ten years at starfleet by the time Kirk entered the training academy. Im guessing theyre dress uniforms or some kind of away team type jumpsuits.

Not if he joines Starfleet after a long period as a civilian doctor, and met Kirk at the Academy.

Nope, those are cadet uniforms.

In other words, these guys didn't do nearly enough homework. Or, most likely, they just don't give a crap.
I'm not sure I see a problem, even if you are correct.. which you are not. :)

Let me put it this way.

Anybody with a modicum of military experience would know that McCoy, in all likelihood, didn't go to the Academy. He was already a doctor and entered Starfleet via some sort of officer training program through Starfleet Medical.

The TOS producers were veterans, they knew this intuitively. This bunch hasn't got a clue.

^You make a lot of sense, however, maybe McC has to go through a semester on Starfleet protocols or something like that.

They didn't make the movie based on your wishes, and because of that they are dweebs?
Yup. :p
Hey all... I think I found the real idiot! Any guesses?

Actually civilian doctors who join the military are NOT given officers uniforms and thrown out the door into service. They undergo their own boot camp and military training.
*NOTE: At OCS (Officer Candidate School) there were many who were older than me. They began their careers as enlisted personnel... some served longer than others before being recommended for OCS. :vulcan:

And that disagrees with what I've said...how?

And the relevance of this is.....?

Err, dude? Star Trek isn't real. Just thought you ought to know, it's, like, fiction. Where you can make stuff up?

I was in an army, and doctors went to the same officer school as I did (for a shortened period)

Some clarification seems to be in order, and we'll turn to M*A*S*H again as an example.

We have doctors who were drafted and went through OCS before being sent off to Korea, like Hawkeye, Trapper, BJ, etc.

And we have doctors like Col. Potter, who were regular Army through and through, and got their medical training while in the Army.

By the same token, I'm sure we have Starfleet doctors who came up through the Academy and got their medical training while serving in Starfleet.

McCoy ain't one of them.

Umm, why not?

I mean, until the movie tells us why not. Given TOS, TAS and TMP-ST6 only, McCoy could easily fit the Col. Potter bill.
