Wachowskis for Superman reboot?

Superman does not need a reboot.

They'd just make him "dark and gritty" which would completely obliterate what makes Superman unique. He's supposed to be a nice guy. A perfect hero. The ultimate Boy Scout. What could a remake do but ruin that?

em... yeah he does. That doesn't mean you make him dark and gritty but I have no interest in seeing any more of Superdeadbeatdad hiding in someone's bushes and stalking people.

The film itself should be a thematic exploration of idealism versus pragmatism, with Superman facing up to the fact that he isn't powerful enough to save everyone all the time without breaking his principals..

It's a little known fact that Superman's high-school principal was Mr. Weatherbee.

Speed Racer was not dark and gritty. It was a bright candy colored confection with a core of family values, morality and honesty anchoring the entire affair. Speed was as much a Boy Scout in this as Superman ever was. That is not to say the movie was good, it was fair at best, but it certainly proves the Brothers can work comfortably outside a Matrix type film.

Are they the best choice? Can't say.

^You know I do like that "S" in that pic. It's the same as the "future" Supes from Batman Beyond but it looks more like a Kryptonian symbol that looks like an "S" rather than being an "S", if that makes sense.

I don't think you need to go dark and gritty, just more realistic and less campy. A good story is fine and you don't really need to reboot much. Just leave out Luthor for once. Or else make him part of the problem, not the sole villain.

They absolutely need to keep Lex Luthor out of the next movie. It's ridiculous to continue to use a non-powered human as the primary villain in these movies. Give him someone to punch! Someone who can toss a building at him!

I'm pretty sure that it was heavily inspired by both the Kingdom Come symbol and the Electric Superman symbol, though the latter might have been inspired by the Burton symbol.

Given that they sure know how to make a visually impressive movie and that they can create an amazing action scene, this isn't entirely bad news. I mean, the end of The Matrix Revolutions, with Neo fighting Agent Smith, was like a Superman movie anyway. But their dialogue grew gradually worse and worse over The Matrix trilogy, until it was risible in the third movie. So if they were to direct this proposed trilogy, I'd hope that someone else would write the script.

I don't think a Wac Supes movie would necessarily be dark and gritty. As someone else pointed out, Speed Racer was a big, glowing, neon kid's movie. And they are huge fanboys - they know their comic history and wouldn't feel the need to slavishly try to replicate the success of The Dark Knight by making an idential movie.

Just don't cast Keanu as The Dude of Steel ...

WB wasn't just talking "dark and gritty" for all DC projects, to emulate TDK. They where also talking "realism" - as much as possible. The one-hit-wonder-brothers are not the people to do realism.

Someone said they'd "make it interesting visually" - while true, these aren't the silent picture days. You need a story and dialogue to go with now. The one-hit-wonder-twins only do visual. They lack skill at the rest.

Superman needs an antagonist that he can talk to, someone to challenge his ideals and repackage them as weakness; Darkseid alone can't do that very well. Now, if they brought back Spacey as Luthor he could fill in that role, but it would be difficult to justify his presence in many scenarios.

Realistic doesn't work for a man who can fly, has impenetrable skin, can move faster than the speed of sound, and can lift an aircraft carrier. What it needs is awesomeness, and humanity. Awesomeness comes from awesome conflicts with awesome villains. Humanity, from showing that Superman is imperfect and deals with the same thoughts, feelings, and flaws that we all do, but goes on anyway.

Realism dictates that the movie last slightly less than 15 seconds, as Superman handily defeats all of the bad guys before the opening credits finish rolling.

The villain could be dark & gritty and Metropolis and the other characters should be somewhat realistic. Superman himself will not work dark & gritty. As far as realism in the Superman character is concerned, I agree with what was said above. Plus, How realistic is it that nobody recognizes him once he puts on a pair of glasses?
However, I would like to see him shown a little more like a real person. There is also no reason why the Clark character needs to be a bumbling rube.
The camp aspect definitely needs to be avoided.

I don't know that its accurate to refer to them as the "Wachowski Brothers" any longer. I believe one of them is a post-op transsexual. Probably better (and more accurate) to refer to them as the "Wachowski Siblings."

Thank the GODS that that movie didn't make it past the "what if we did this..." phase.

Ugh. It would've been a horrible, horrible, terrible, massive, EPIC FAIL on so many levels that Richard Lester would've breathed a sigh of relief.
