vvlcn's Art Thread!

Just gorgeous! You nailed that one really well. :bolian:

Thanks for all the love on my T'Lyn drawing! It really took off on Twitter, and it's the first time an art piece of mine has blown up in a while. You guys rock!

I've got a couple of days to myself coming up here, so I'm going to binge-watch all the TOS movies! Here's a lil Chekov line art to celebrate!

I'll be coloring this one in the coming days, since I have some time I'm going to experiment a bit with some of the brushes I have on my tablet. I also took progress shots of the initial and middle sketch of this one!

A lot of my artwork starts out incredibly messy, as can be seen in my WIP shots. I'm lucky I have the undo and lasso buttons at my leisure to make fixing and touching up things so much easier for me. I don't know what I would do without those two features at this point.

Stay tuned for more!

I really like seeing your progress in the WIP shots as, not only can we see how you get to the final piece, but they inspire that "maybe I could do something like that?" feeling. Thank you! :bolian:

Well-deserved, it's such a cool interpretation. I guess the hype is also on account of there not being much (if any) T'Lyn fanart at the moment.

The Chekov piece is cool as well, although for some reason I'm seeing him more as a somewhat younger McCoy. But even without the resemblance, I just love your style!

Thank you so much! And I’m glad that my art could be an inspiration! Anyone can draw really, it just takes a lot of time and practice to hone in on your skills. It’s taken me well over 10 years to get where I’m at now, and I’m still learning all the time!

Thank you so much for the kind words! I was having a lot of trouble in the middle sketch because all I could see was McCoy. My issue is that a lot of the features I draw are soft and round, it’s just inherently my style. Walter Koenig’s own features are sharper and longer than DeForest Kelley’s, but for some reason it’s not translating well with my style and he keeps looking like an off-kilter McCoy. This drawing has been nothing short of a nightmare trying to get right, I actually went through more drafts of different angles and things before settling on this one. Looks like it needs some more adjustments, though, so respectively it’s back to the drawing board before I continue with coloring!

Honestly, don't beat yourself up too much about this drawing. I would totally buy that as Chekov in a comic panel, for example. Likeness isn't the most important aspect of a drawing. He looks super cute, friendly and jovial – probably the most important factors to get right about Chekov. Also, looking at pictures of movie-era Walter Koenig now, his face doesn't have a ton of features that can be translated into a recognizable drawing. I feel like you definitely got the eyes and the nose right. Koenig's lips are very pronounced, I feel like. His head is a little more square perhaps, and you see a lot of his forehead.

But again, I don't feel like you have to change anything about this drawing. It's super cool, like all your stuff.

Oh I know! But I also finished this drawing at four in the morning and in my sleep deprived frenzy of trying to get the line work done, I definitely fudged a few things in this piece that I would like to change. Better to do it now while I haven’t colored it yet!

And thank you for the pointers/suggestions! I’ll definitely work on his lips and forehead more!

I finally, finally got around to doing my first speed paint!

I drew Ensign Jennifer from Lower Decks this time around, in full color too!

As proud as I want to be of this drawing, it's been hell in a handbasket. I've worked on this project for almost twelve hours straight, and I nearly lost all of it. The drawing itself took over five, and I had a ton of problems with recording and editing the footage for the other who knows how many hours that I spent just trying to piece this project together. Anything that could have gone wrong happened; corrupted files, no more storage, missing footage, buggy editing applications, tablet malfunctions, you name it. I know the speed paint itself is a bit clunky and doesn't look great, but I spent a lot of time on it and it would mean the world if y'all could take a gander at my video if you can!

This is how I spend my days off I guess, which is stressing myself to the grave about some video project that was supposed to be for fun!

I watched your video and, well, I'm rather stunned! I've never used art programs to create anything from scratch (I'm sure MSPaint doesn't count :D), so I had no idea that so much time and effort goes into producing such a wonderful pieces like this. I hadn't really considered that it's just like doing a physical drawing/painting - I just assumed the computer/program made it quicker and more effortless, and added in all the highlights, shadows, colour grading etc at the touch of a button (or maybe two). I do like that you can undo things to have another go, whereas with physical mediums it's a case of trying to erase something or paint over it without ruining anything (I'm getting used to the amount of mistakes that make it into my work because I can't/don't dare try to correct them).
Anyway, thank you so much for taking the time and making the effort to put the video together - especially in the face of all the problems you had. I hope the next one will go a lot more smoothly, and be fun!

And your Jennifer is just amazing!!

Lots of great work in this thread. And thanks for sharing that video, so much attention to detail!

I struggle with figures even when I trace over reference images, so I remain in awe of anyone who can produce quality art from a blank page/screen. :techman:

Regard the Chekov sketch, it may not quite capture Walter Koenig but I you've nailed a likeness of Anton Yelchin, even if it's unintentional. :)

Thank you all so much for all the love on my Jennifer piece, I'll craft individual responses when I'm able to do so.

However, I must confess I'm not well, mentally that is. I'll spare the details, but a lot of things are going on in my life and it's been a year to the week since something incredibly traumatic happen to me. I'm going through right now, to put things bluntly. I tend to express myself and find comfort in my art, as it's been a form of therapy for me for a long time now, so I drew this one out quickly. It's been a while since I've drawn vent art, and trust me when I say that I feel so bad for taking it out on Chekov.

Hopefully, normal operations will resume shortly. Sorry if this piece is a downer.

Hope you all are well.

I know exactly how you feel about using your art as a means to deal with mental anguish, @vvlcn. One of the reasons I started my Sketch of the Week series back in January was I'd been going through an exceedingly rough and awful time at my previous job. Getting back into drawing on a regular basis was something I never knew I needed to give me a mental boost and give me something to look forward to doing after getting home from day after day of misery and anxiety at that job. Luckily, I've moved on to a new job that's more welcoming and non-toxic to my mental health, but I still use my art to help me get through tough patches. Hopefully, everything sorts itself out for you soon!

Love both your Jennifer and your new Chekov, @vvlcn! Especially the Chekov piece is pretty powerful. I think it's expressing an emotional state most of us have found themselves in at some point in their lives. By the way, if you ever feel the need to sound off about your feelings or just want to chat, just shoot me a PM. Sometimes it helps to talk so strangers about some thoughts or problems. :)

Also, thanks for sharing your progress video! I always love to see those. It's so cool to see how you're working out the details and go about coloring the piece.

Well it's been a hot minute (re: five and half months) since I last posted much of anything here. Started a new job, more things have been going on that I'd rather not divulge into, and I fell out of Star Trek for a bit. And I sort of left off with a vent-y post, I'm sorry if I worried anyone. I've read everyone's replies and thank you all so much for your kind words, I promise they haven't gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Hopefully I'll be on an upwards trajectory soon, as I'm starting down the road to recovery. Fingers crossed things will get better.

Since I've been gone, I upgraded my eight-year-old iPad to a much newer model, started using Procreate, and I finally have an Apple Pencil. It's made drawing much easier and faster, I'll say, and I finally drew some Trek art on the new rig.

Just a (sort of) AOS Spock, nothing fancy. I'm experimenting with more looser styles of sketching and drawing, and new brushes as well. Maybe one of these days I'll find a style that sticks.
