Voyager under the radar

Laura Cynthia Chambers

Vice Admiral
Admiral
What things about Voyager did you not notice the first time around?

While trolling Memory Alpha, I've been struck by the number of random subjects I would find that were not mentioned in Trek until Voyager, and then, several times in that show. (I can't recall any offhand.)

I am envious of you mutants with off hands; most of us humans have to make do with just the two.

Apologies for not finding the previous clip where Kryten removes his hand and tells it to go fetch help as his short-term memory is affected by the EM and RF interference and all, but:

(He would put his visual sensor on his middle digit and not realize he's seeing the crew and audience be insulted, but I digress... So, here's a fun side-note: Series V loved using the Commodore Amiga with Video Toaster for special effects... and even for hardware props too, as the partially masked-off keyboards are an obvious giveaway due to beige color and location and shape of keys - how pedantic is that, woohoo! But I digress, with typical digression within a digression too, wheeeeee! )

"Living Witness" has a flaw that I saw only on last viewing a few days ago, involving how a simulation/facsimile of what the sick bay and equipment within looked like could somehow operate the EMH fully - it's glossed over so well that it doesn't jump out on initial viewing (if not two, YMMV), as the overall presentation and themes more than compensate for the teeny-weeny-teensy plot contrivance. Especially with Janeway and crew now getting to wear outfits and do things worthy of BDSM dungeon how-to videos, the story knows how to get you to look the other way, but before I digress again...

To be clear, you're wondering how they managed to make a reproduction of Voyager's computer that could run a program as well as Voyager could?

QUARREN: Begin dictation. I'm resuming work on artefact two seven one, the Voyager data storage device. I've decided to try using period tools from the simulation itself. With any luck, they'll be more compatible. Hmm. There's far more data here than I expected. Seems more like a programme of some sort. Yes. Yes, it's an optronic datastream. A hologram.

I agree that it seems a bit strange that

1) they know only very little about the ship's crew, the characters (or at least so little that it's all grossly distorted), and about the ship's weapon configuration and such, but 2) they apparently know about some of their tools in great detail. I suppose they found an engineering database or some such thing earlier but not much else.

For some reason I always thought Tuvok and Harry had chairs at their stations and was surprised when looking over the virtual bridge set on the Roddenberry Archive set that they don't.

While looking for screencaps on trekcore.com for the next caption contest I noticed the spelling error in this screencap of the flight control station..

I didn't notice that they used the same group of extras for quite a long time.

It'd be a little harder to explain rotating people on and off the ship in their situation. Where would someone lost in the DQ transfer to?

If Voyager/Val Jean had had a larger surviving crew, they could have gotten away with it - different people assigned to different shifts . But then the feeling of being far from home, relying on limited resources (even "human" resources) would be lessened.
