Voyager Themed Goalie Mask

synesthete

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I'd like to present to everyone... my (almost finished) Voyager-themed goalie mask! It's being painted by Head Strong Grafx (www.headstronggrafx.com).

When I get a goalie mask painted, I always choose a theme that I'm passionate about and I think has a bit of me in it. For this mask I decided to go with a Voyager theme, as it's my all-time favorite TV show.

On the left side of the mask (left when you're looking at it) we have Voyager coming out of a nebular cloud, akin to Voyager's intro. It's also alluding to the Badlands' nebula.

Directly underneath of that is The Caretaker.

On the right side of the mask I have Voyager is in a more transparent transwarp/warp. Below that is the Borg Sphere.

So I have a bit of the beginning and end of Voyager on each side of the mask.

On the chin is my last name in the Voyager font.

The backplate features Voyager going through a solar storm (like the intro), and on the right it has the United Federation of Planets emblem with the Omega symbol in the middle, an obvious reference to the Omega molecule. It's in some ways representative of my personality. Along the bottom is "synesthete," which obviously is my screen name at some boards and at Play Station Network. If you aren't familiar with synesthesia, it's a "melding of the senses." To put it simply, I can see sounds/music, numbers are personified, and time isn't linear to me. Weird stuff, I know, haha!

Anyway, I hope all of you enjoy my mask, and I'm looking forward to being a member here and talking more about my favorite Trek series!

(This is also posted in the Voyager forum for Voyager fan art.. hope that's OK!)

That is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS.

I want a fridge like that.. or a car except I don't care for cars.. or heck just muralize my whole house.

Nice! I'd be scared to actually use it for fear of scratching it!

Thanks! It'll have several coats of protective coating on it that's otherwise used on cars and planes. Generally that protects it from much damage, but eventually, like all masks, I'll get some chips. It is almost too beautiful to wear. ...almost. :)

I want that design on my guitar! Flippin' sweet! Pardon my ignorance but which sport is it going to be used in? I'm British so only have knowledge regarding football and cricket, and that's pretty fooking far from a cricket helmet!

Absolutely inspired! Not only is this a beautiful creation, but it's a fabulous personal statement. I can just see you facing the world with all the resoluteness of a fully armed starship. Brilliant design and resplendent message of confidence.

Now thats a very Epically painted Hockey Helmet  :) :techman:

I hope what ever team you play on it wins many a game cus of the sheer awesomeness of this helmet :) :techman:

Thank you! And you're absolutely correct: it's absolutely a personal statement. I always try to inject a bit of my personality and personal statements into each mask. In this one we have beginnings, ends, the curiosity and innovation employed by the Voyager crew, the Omega molecule, and my name and screen name. Absolutely a fantastic job by Head Strong Grafx.

Is there any other kind of hockey besides the kind played on ice? :p
I assume you're being facetious, but I'll answer anyway for our foreign friend. :) There's also inline, in which I hold several collegiate records. But I only play ice now. There's also field, which is a women's sport, and is horrible to watch.

Nice helmet. :) And yeah, there's also ball/field/street hockey and some of it, depending on the variation isn't even played on skates. I think there's even some leagues dedicated to street hockey.

Aaaaaah hockey! Fair play. The closest I ever got to that was twatting a puck around with a stick in the gym at my old high school many years ago. Much fun.

How long did the whole process take from blank slate to finished mask? How much did it all cost you (in $, I can do the conversion to £ myself)
:)

The process from clean slate to finished will have been about a week and a half, although that's somewhat due to the weather. In reality it takes about 3-4 days.

This type of design usually costs in the range of $600-$1000, depending on the painter. Wish I could tell you an exact price, but I bartered with him.

In case it wasn't obvious I was speaking tongue-in-cheek when asking if there was any other kind of hockey.

That's about £400-£700 which is pretty reasonable for something that you would treasure for a long time. I should imagine covered in tasty Borg artwork would cost closer to a grand. It's got my mind ticking over has this, cheers for posting man.

Is there a good bond of paint to helmet? If not, one puck to the head will knock a whole bunch o' paint off.

Absolutely. I know the guy who did my mask also does guitars, but I'd bet you'd want someone much closer to you. :) If you had a WHOLE helmet in Borg stuff, I have little doubt you're looking at at least $1000 USD up to $2000 USD. That's just an immense amount of detail. It's pretty incredible the amount of detail he put into the Sphere; I can't imagine doing the same for the entire mask!

The paint is sealed on by a coating (a few coats, for that matter) for cars and airplanes. The process involves, approximately: sanding off existing coats and paints, spray primer, paint artwork on primer, and then seal it with at least 3 coats of sealant (which protects it).

Eventually you do see some chipping due to pucks, the dangler (a clear plastic thing that hangs in front of the bottom part of the chin which protects your neck), and just general wear. You figure I get pucks that bend in my metal cage, so pucks to the helmet do occasionally chip off little bits of paint. Usually nothing too big, though, and many painters warranty it for lifetime, so I could just send it back for repairs.
