Voyager redesign

JJohnson

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I was wondering if someone may be able to re-design (actually, slightly modify) Voyager just a bit for an alternate Voyager series. Essentially it's the same overall design, but:
*22 decks
*ramscoops not covered in the middle (so, sides and a front are glowing red)
*warp engines slightly longer towards the back
*aft shuttle bay large enough for the Delta Flyer and several shuttles
*second shuttlebay in aft of saucer the size of the current shuttlebay.

Thanks,

James

a. What would be the purpose of such a project?

b. Why don't you give it a try yourself instead of always asking other people to do it for you.

This might be a good project for the monthly challenge, JJohnson, since the theme is "Upgrades" :bolian:.

Hi Ptrope,
Good idea! Where would I submit that?

And for Flux, (a) for a Voyager reboot series, and (B) because I have no job and no other way to edit pictures other than MS Paint. Economy bit me hard. :)

James

JJohnson, we're always eager to have more people participate in the monthly challenges. The main criterion is that the art you submit should be done during the time of the challenge and for the challenge, rather than something you might have had lying around that fits the specifics of the current challenge. Create a thread, like you've done here, to show your WIPs (although it's not required), and then submit your final (single) entry to me via e-mail by midnight on the last day of the month. It's just that easy! :techman:

Now, as for resources for your redesign, if you're looking for an image editor that is more capable than MS Paint, you might look into The GIMP, an open-source image editor that has a pretty good following and a great deal of online community support. Best of all, it's free! It's not Photoshop, but it can do a lot of things that Photoshop can do, and the price is right ;). If you're interested in 3D modeling, you might look into Blender, which is an open-source 3D modeling program, and also free. It sounds like you know what you want to see - and I think anyone here can attest that it's even more enjoyable when you are able to create it yourself, although that doesn't mean that a lot of us won't be happy to help if we find the idea interesting and we have the free time. In fact, that's kind of what the challenges are all about - by winning, someone earns the right to challenge everyone else to a project of his or her own imagination, and hopefully by participating, we all get something out of it ourselves.

(B) because I have no job and no other way to edit pictures other than MS Paint. Economy bit me hard. :)

Can you afford a pencil and paper? ;)

No offense to the great computer graphics artists here, but I love seeing pencil drawings of ships from time to time.

I'll give it a shot. To start out, we've got 14px decks on the source, including a 1px deck. In total, that'd be 308px there. Going from 15 to 22 decks, that's 1.46x the size. Should I simply inflate the image to 146.6%?

So, the only things I think should stay the same relative size would be the landing pads and deflector. The aeroshuttle will stay the same size; decks will still be 14px. New version soon....

A few more decks:

I have a question for the physics minded amongst us; how much am I increasing the internal volume of the ship by adding 7 decks? It's measurements originally are:

Length : 343 m -> 503m
Beam : 133 m -> 195m
Height : 66 m -> 96.8m
Decks : 15 -> 22
mass: 700,000 metric tons
Crew: 141

With shuttlebay 2:

I'm not keen on the ship being longer than the Enterprise...perhaps 20 or 18 decks? And is my math right for the increased ship's length, beam, and height?

This is based on simple resizing of the ship:

Starship_Comparison_by_JJohnson1701.jpg

344m at 15 decks
457m at 20 decks
503m at 22 decks

I can do the internals without much difficulty...but making the windows on the outside work...that will take more skill than I have.

James

If size increases proportionally, volume increases cubed...

So a 45% length increase would give 1.45 ^ 3 = 3.048625 times the volume (and mass).

While you are changing the Voyager, can you make it look less like an upside down toilet seat? :D Sorry, I've never cared for the proportions of the Intrepid class. ;)
