Perhaps DSC will bring the TNG sentiment to the pre-TOS era?
Apparently we want safe and reliable, politically correct and homogeneous .. borderline isolationist. Trying to work adventure into that is going to be a trick.
I thought so tooHopefully it manages to improve on both. Aim ever higher, and all.
And what's this about Spock's many ancestors? I thought we were just getting another dose of Sarek and Amanda.
I am too. It's just reckless speculation on my part, but I grow weary of the constant negativity about a show that hasn't even aired yet. That's a tall order. I'm taking a very I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it attitude towards this new series. I'm not against it, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.
I truly do not understand this point of view-I'm sorry, but I don'tPeople are pretty deep into analysis these days, everybody with a keyboard. More so since the end of Voyager. Trying to recapture the past only works for the setting not the mood.
I'm thinking any new Trek is going to reflect our times. We're not in the liberated, challenge the system Sixties or the Eighties I remember with its fashions and color. There is not even the turn of the Century optimism. No wonder Discovery was chosen to be set referenced to the Original. Apparently we want safe and reliable, politically correct and homogeneous .. borderline isolationist. Trying to work adventure into that is going to be a trick.
You said all that not me. Scratching my head..Because apparently just having gay, Muslim, trans, Jews, Chinese, African, bisexual, Latin, non-neurotypical, and plain old 'don't romatasize the bigot' characters are the antithesis of 'Adventure.'
A funny view to see in the VOY forum. Which besides Trek's usual bad track record when it came to LGBTQ+ issues, wasn't lacking for diversity in characters or themes. They didn't always pull it off well, but that's also a bit of a Trek tradition.
I think that was many people's first reaction..The audience's perception of Discovery is probably going to be more dangerous to the show than the actual quality of the show. At least the skeptical ones. A lot of fans think Pre TOS=Boring/Limited and if the slightest thing is off, that may be it for the show.
And I've got to admit, the moment I heard Discovery was set pre TOS, that was my first reaction. Honestly, it going to be hard to feel suspense about humans, the Federation, earth, etc. in danger, when you know how everything ends up anyway. And the era--for some reason, seems drab....
I just want to see something entertaining. Something unexpected, intriguing, wild, crazy sexy, all of it. I'm skeptical but on that basis I'll give Discovery a chance. It may surprise us.
There is not even the turn of the Century optimism....we want safe and reliable, politically correct and homogeneous .. borderline isolationist. Trying to work adventure into that is going to be a trick.
I really think we do live in times where people are withdrawing. Brexit, President Trump wanting a wall. To me that reflects fear, wanting to isolate. I also believe that we are also at pains to walk on eggshells when we speak. I mean look at the way you jumped down my throat for saying "politcially correct and homogeneous.. borderline isolationist". You couldn't wait to fill in the gaps with a kind of angry accusation.
Discovery has to make a show with this kind of audience. It is that mood I find that will make it harder for them. They can set it pre-TOS to try and capture the fame of TOS but to me it was a fearful choice. To boldy go where? In the Trek Universe past?
Yikes.. sometimes we can live a world where some people want PC and some want walls, lol. That would be because people voting out of Brexit and wanting to 'build a wall' are not 'PC.' 'PC' is the extreme opposite to that.
And here's the thing: people should think before they speak. There is a gap between the brain and mouth for a reason. No one should be censored. But if somone can't deal with being called a bigot, then they should say bigoted things.
And if you don't want people to take the wrong conclusions from what you convey, make sure you know the definitions of the words you choose to write.
Yikes.. sometimes we can live a world where some people want PC and some want walls, lol.
Hela if you don't like what I write report it. If you want to use the word bigot as a reason, back it up. But report it.
It's beautiful isn't it? It's supposed to be a moon emerging in a dark space. Fitted my mood today, lol.is that a picture of an eclipse? About a year and a half ago, I made a time lapse of a full lunar eclipse and that looks almost identical to some of the photos. clouds and everything.
I'm curious as to how setting a show in post-Dominion War is somehow "independent" since it would be informed by what came before.Context.. "No wonder Discovery was chosen to be set referenced to the Original. Apparently we want safe and reliable, politically correct and homogeneous .. borderline isolationist. Trying to work adventure into that is going to be a trick."
I've read repeatedly that one of the reasons Discovery is set pre-TOS is because of the familiar such as references to the Original apparently brings. A safe and reliable choice. Maybe hoping for the Originals warm and fuzzies or some credibility. Discovery is not based on something independent.. fresh.. NEW. Admit it. Maybe the story telling will be but the setting is just about a spent force.
Star Trek has always reflected in its cast social and.. planetary diversity. TOS went as far as it could with its cast. Don't know what happened during the TNG days but I guess they were a diverse enough lot. DS9 and Voyager have had great casts in my opinion.. and that trend is going to be reflected in 2017 Star Trek too, with the expectations of everybody and their dog, for today's time. I didn't say 'demands' but that is what they are going to be.
