I waffled for a few seconds on whether to give this a 6 or a 7. As I think someone else mentioned, I would have given it a 6.5, but decided, somewhat generously I'd say, to round it up to a 7. I'd give WWLB an 8 or 8.5 by comparison, but I may be biased in that I thought DS9 was a better show and I went to the NYC premiere for WWLB and met ISB and got his signature; which was amazing for me.

It was...good, but it was impossible for me to watch it without comparing it to WWLB and finding it a bit lacking by comparison. It's not the puff piece I worried it would be, but kind of like VOY itself I wish it had dug a bit deeper.

I'm glad they touched on Jennifer Lien's departure (although not in as much depth as I was hoping for), and the tension of Jeri Ryan's joining the cast, and I was surprised that they talked about Ronald Moore, but the Garrett Wang stuff felt gratuitous; I also agree with others that at times this felt a bit like a promotion for the cruise, which was pretty banal. What it mostly reminded me of is that VOY just didn't have the gravitas and generally didn't tackle a lot of the harder issues that DS9 was willing to take on. Indeed, call it patting yourself on the back if you'd like, but something I liked about the DS9 doc was when they were recounting the various issues that the series had tackled, and VOY just doesn't have that by comparison, though the discussion of how it influenced women was good to see.

One of the more 'interesting' but also kind of annoying parts to me was that there were instances of TPTB contradicting each other. I'm pretty sure I know who I believe in those...variant accounts...but I don't like it when I feel as though people in documentaries about something that aired over 20 years ago are still playing politics.

This isn't exactly anyone's fault (or is it?), but WWLB also just felt a bit more fun than this one, with the musical performances and the cast perhaps being a bit more willing to make fun of themselves.

I was in between 6 and 7 as well. It was never going to be an 8 so I settled on a 7. I'll watch it again soon to see if I missed anything the first time around. I liked the Tom Mazza stuff, he was someone I'd never heard from before. Who was sitting next to Berman that was helping him "recollect" things properly? I don't think they identified him in the film.

Huh, his hair looked different later on in the film.
Threw me plus they didn't ID him here like Berman.
I was kind of wondering who that was as well, and thought maybe Berman had an assistant present (I'm sure Braga would be thrilled by that :p ).

I don't want to cast aspersions, so I'll just say it was unfortunate that there were so many things that Berman didn't seem to clearly recall.

In his defense he's 79 years old and it's been over 20 years since he had any involvement with Star Trek. We still live and breath this stuff but for him it's a chapter in his life that he, for the most part, has probably closed some time ago.

Maybe, but it bothered me that the things he didn't seem to remember also seemed to coincide with the things that might reflect least favorably upon him.

For all that I've heard that the DS9 crew were more 'professionals doing their jobs' than the VOY or TNG crews, these two documentaries have given me the sense that the DS9 folks had more fun getting back together.

Been rewatching the DS9 one, "What We Leave Behind". It's fascinating, and a little sad that the show wasn't appreciated in its time. Maybe some vindication that it's grown on people so much.

It is an enjoyable and entertaining documentary. There were some tidbits that I hadn't known about, which was appreciated, and so was hearing everyone's thoughts with a few decades' distance. Then again, I also have to echo the alrady often articulated criticism of the pacing. The film lacked a strong throughline or raison d'etre. We as fans need to be given a raison d'etre for anything Trek, obviously, but as a narrative, it wasn't fully clear the parts that were featured were in there, and in this order. Despite a rather long running time, it ultimately left out more than it included about the show's history and development.

According to a recent interview David did on a podcast, it turns out that CBS got rid of their telecines; which is what they use to convert film to digital. So they weren't able to convert the shots they wanted to use to high definition. Once again, another example of their failure to be transparent with backers ESPECIALLY since this was a stretch goal of theirs'. Even though David thinks AI did a pretty good job, I think it looks even worse than the DVDs do.

I thought the theme sequence looked a little bad actually. It looked better on the original version. They basically rose more money and delivered nothing, and didn't tell anyone until now. That's a big yikes.

I don't suppose you recall which one? I'm curious to hear his words because...well, my knowledge on the subject is limited, but that reason doesn't seem to make much sense on the face of it? I could be wrong of course, but my understanding is that the telecines are the tape versions of the footage. You use a telecine machine to transfer your film footage to video, so if you want to transfer the original footage to HD you need to go back to the actual film elements, not the tape ones.

Just as TNGR and the DS9 Doc both went back to the actual film.

Curious. :vulcan:

I do, actually. I meant to mention it in my post. He was on The Transporter Room. I saw the clip on Instagram.

Thanks, I'll check it out. :bolian:

Edit: Okay, he's talking about the telecine machines themselves. Apparently CBS closed the entire department. ...Which presumably means that if CBS ever want to transfer old footage from film again they'd have to pay someone else to do it/use their equipment?

I wonder when it happened. Should the fundraiser have ever "promised" this in the first place or was it never an option?

I guess we should all abandon any lingering filaments of hope that we'll ever get DS9 or VOY eps in HD at this point.
