VOY book "Echoes" - opinions? (And other early books too)

I recently found Echoes in a used book store and decided to pick it up- it was the only numbered Voyager novel that grabbed me. Any opinions on it? And what about other early "numbered" Voyager novels- which ones were good?

I thought Echoes was quite fun when I first read it around the time it came out- a clever if traditional parallel-universe romp. It's the only numbered VOY novel I've read.

What Brendan said.

I can remember reading it -- damn, ten years ago! -- and enjoying it. Be familiar with "Deadlock," and all is good. :)

Among the other early numbered books, I remember being impressed with Susan Wright's Violations, but I couldn't today tell you why. I think it might've had something to do with the bioneural gelpack storyline; that seemed like a logical implication of the technology. I seem to recall a Tom Paris plotline, too, that at least acknowledged the idea that some members of the crew might think about staying behind and forging a life that had a modicum of certainty to it.

I seem to remember that the early numbered VOY novels stayed truer to the series' premise in that the ship actually had limited resources and was not a supership. I liked The Final Fury, the final book in the Invasion! crossover.

Echoes remains, in my opinion, the best piece of Voyager fiction out there, although Jeri Ryan's biographies are close behind. Gripping mystery, poignant scenes... the crew going up close and personal with a tragedy of unimaginable porportions... Good reading.

Jeri Ryan's? ;)

^ Hey, it took me long enough to sort out the various Davids and the sundry Kevins. The Jeris are next on my list.

Considering "Deadlock" is one of my favorite Voyager episodes, I think I'll really be enjoying it. :)

Now that really intrigues me, considering how much I loved the concept. Maybe I'll pick some of the other earlier books?

I've been on a weird Voyager kick lately. I've been recording the series on SpikeTV, I picked up the String Theory trilogy (for $12 total), Echoes, and the Distant Shores anthology. Weird, huh?

Thanks to everyone for there insights. Keep them coming!

Although I think enjoyed a few numbered VOY novels, scanning all the titles and covers doesn't jolt many strong memories of the storylines. Which is a worry. The first three Golden novels, "The Murdered Sun", "Marooned" and especially "Seven of Nine" were quite strong, hence the author's initial popularity with VOY readers, but I felt her "Dark Matter" trilogy was tedious and slow moving.

I agree that ab Hugh's "Invasion!: The Final Fury" was good, too, managing to give a fresh approach to the fourth instalment.

Awesome book! I love it so much that I read it every two/three years. ;-) I also liked "The Murdered Sun".

Re: VOY book "Echoes" - opinions? (And other early books too

I have to echo Brendan and Allyn here-- nothing groundbreaking, but a very good, very solid read. Well constructed and enjoyable all the way through.

Still one of the best Voyager novels.

I read it and liked it.

I really enjoyed it years ago...I think I still have it laying around somewhere, now I want to reread it!

Re: VOY book "Echoes" - opinions? (And other early books too

I bought every one of the first 16 Voyager numbered novels, and regard Echoes as the best.

Many of the books in those days were a touch formulaic and limited in scope, particularly this series as a fair number were written before the series was even started. Echos had the feel of being a major event, and was an engrossing read.

It's the best of the numbered novels to that point, IMO, though the following one (Seven of Nine) was also excellent.

Dean Wesley Smith's very solid construction -- all of his books are like a sturdily built and comfortable chair. The poignancy I would have to attribute to his wife Kris Rusch. (And yes, I know there was a third writer.)

This book is particularly significant to me because I was in the middle of reading it when my mother died in 1998. It was five years before I could bring myself to go back to it, begin again, and finish it. In those five years I became a published writer and participated in a few of Dean and Kris's writing retreats on the Oregon coast. I was a different person in a different place the second time around.

Both of me liked it.

Re: VOY book "Echoes" - opinions? (And other early books too

I remember enjoying Echoes a lot and it's one of the handful of VGR novels I have in my collection. I haven't read it in ages though, and after the remarks here I'll have to pull it out of storage and give it a fresh read.

I also liked the Section 31 tale Shadow (also by Dean & Kris) and the aforementioned The Final Fury. And because I'm a nut for novelizations, I also liked Caretaker, Flashback and Equinox. :)

Re: VOY book "Echoes" - opinions? (And other early books too

Will reading Echoes make me like "Deadlock" more?

Re: VOY book "Echoes" - opinions? (And other early books too

I liked Echoes a lot, and I know there was some others I liked, but I can't remember which ones they were.

Re: VOY book "Echoes" - opinions? (And other early books too

I love parallel-universe stories. Echoes is a great one.

I admit I was confused by how a universe can be "to the right" of ours, but I figured that was just a metaphor. :p
