VOY: Acts of Contrition Excerpt (Spoilers, Obviously)

Kirsten Beyer

Writer
Red Shirt
Good evening,

For anyone who might be interested, the longest mother fucking excerpt I have ever seen for one of my novels is available right now under the Mass Market Paperback version of Acts of Contrition at Amazon.com. (Nothing yet under the Kindle version....hmm.)

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Voy...&qid=1410758396&sr=8-1&keywords=Kirsten+Beyer

The excerpt currently contains all of chapter one of the novel. I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that sooner rather than later, it might be cut down quite a bit.

Please note that this is not the beginning of the novel. A prologue precedes this, which is not available.

Also of possible interest, over the last several weeks I have noticed the paperback's price increasing ever so slightly. I swear a few days ago it was listed at $5.89 and tonight it's at $6.13. Not sure what's up with that but if you think you're going to be buying this one, may as well buy early (and buy often:)) as I have no idea where the price is going to end up.

So...if you want a rather large snippet...go for it. We'll talk about the rest in a few weeks.

Best,
KMFB

Excellent! I was wondering literally last night if we'd be getting an excerpt soon.

I've already paid for this (pre-order), so I can read as much as I want and not feel guilt! ;)

Thanks for posting about this Kirsten. I'm going to dive right in. I didn't pre-order because my local Chapters has been getting Trek books about 2 weeks earlier than Amazon has been shipping, so I want to try my luck over there first before I go the Amazon route.

Edit:
Just finished. As always, it pulled me right in and made it feel like i'd never left. I can't wait to read the rest. Two KMFB Voyager books in one year! Hopefully 2015 has a least one, or else we'll go through some harsh withdrawls :techman:

I love Liam O'Donnell so very much.

:) Me too. But then, I'm totally biased.

It should. The manuscript for Atonement is done and through its first round of edits. Copyedits coming soon, I suspect. I don't have a release date yet, but I'm fairly certain it will be sometime in 2015.

I'm just starting the next one now and while, again, I don't have a release date, I'm guessing we're looking at early to mid 2016 on that one.

The contracts I've been given thus far pretty much guarantee that you're getting new Voyager books every 8 months or so through early 2016. After that, I have no idea. I'm writing as fast as I can.

Hugh Cambridge really *is* Dr. House, isn't he?

Yeah. Sometimes. Minus the drug problems, of course.

Hugh Laurie was always the template, and House was very much on my mind when I started writing back in Full Circle. I'd been watching it faithfully for a long time. But seven books later (for me anyway) he's developed beyond that in so many ways. A rough idea for a character grounded in a specific actor can be helpful in the beginning. It helps me visualize stuff and can inform and ground lots of choices. But sometimes they develop just fine on their own without such a clear image in my head.

Cambridge and O'Donnell are very specific people in my head.

Eden wasn't, nor was Farkas. But in writing them they became fully realized for me as individuals I can see, but could never point to a particular actor as inspiration.

Best,
Kirsten

Oh My God!!!!! I was about to log in EVERQUEST 2 ... now i have to read !!!!!! trolls and orcs can wait !

I pre ordered the book one month ago XD ! I love HUGH CAMBRIDGE !!!! the counseling session he made with Tom and harry is one of my favorite scenes.. imagine me reading on my phone and laughing ... in bathroom ! yes i know an uneven place to read but since i started to read ST books my addiction took at warp speed , slip stream and trans warp together :O ! Even at work i hide somewhere and read . i knew that is a bad idea to buy a smartphone with Kindle app on it :(

I have finished :O ugh hurry 30th september!!!!

Poor Hugh :(

Kirsten i have a question for you not ST related: I see in your presentation in the books that they say you showed up in PASSIONS - they mean the soap opera between 1999 and 2006 ? can you tell me who you were or if you were a screen writer? I was a PASSIONS fan until they messed up everything going from drama to lame ghost supernatural comedy . lol

^Probably because everyone around here knows her as Kirsten Mother Fucking Beyer due to her Mother Fucking Awesomness. And she's an adult...and most of us swear. It lets us express emotion/passion in a way that everyone can understand :)

I'm reminded of a joke -- I think it's in Asimov's Treasury of Humor -- in which a soldier is back on base from a 24 hour pass, describing the events (and the woman he met) in "Army Creole," so thick that nearly every other word was some variation on "fuck." His friends, on the edge of their bunks, asked what happened next.
"What the fuck do you think happened, you fucking idiots? We had sexual intercourse."

Then, of course, there's a dirty limerick I know, that, well, I'd better censor it if I'm going to post it:
Dash dash, dash dash-dash dash-dash-dash
Dash dash-dash dash-dash-dash dash-dash-dash
Dash dash dash dash dash
Dash dash dash dash dash
Dash dash-dash dash-dash-dash dash-dash-fuck.

^Which reminds me of my real-life experience where I overheard a couple of passengers on a bus having a conversation in which that profanity was used so casually and routinely as a pronoun or embellishment that it got slurred to "muh-fug" or "muh-fuh," but when one of the speakers actually wanted to convey intense emotion about something, he said with feeling, "What the hell?!"

lmao

I don't know if you are aware but in Italy they double voice everything . Lately when in US movies they started to use the "fuck" word the italians who were still under some kinda censorship found themselves at loss of words because there is not any swearing word close to fuck translation . So the word would be translated vaffancullo or more literally they would use the men organ to describe this . Of course they were prohibited to use those words too and had to settle for something more pleasant at censorship's ears. it was funny to see the real actors lips pronouncing the F word then to hear in the Italian actor doubling it. But today they gave up so now even in italian double acting they use harsh swearing lol. The swearing is also a way to express yourself someone around here in a news paper said once :p
