A shaft of light descended from the heavens, piercing the darkness of the night with its otherworldly glow. I stopped, frozen in place, unable to command my legs to run, as I so desperately wanted to do. Time seemed to slow to a crawl. How long I stood there, bathed in the streaming light, I do not know. Suddenly, there was a voice. A voice that sounded like the roiling thunder during a summer storm, but simultaneously like a choir of a thousand bells, all ringing in perfect harmony. A voice that I could feel in my core, reverberating inside my skull. A voice that shook the very ground with each mellifluous syllable.

The voice said, "Thou shalt go forth, and log into the TrekBBS, and there thou shalt cast thy vote in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Avatar Contest!"

Then the voice and the light were gone, leaving me alone in the darkness, with a yearning emptiness in my soul. An emptiness that may never be filled. Each day I pray that I am able to hear that miraculous voice just one more time.

Was it an advanced being from another planet? Was it the voice of God? I may never know.

But I voted. By all that is holy, I voted.
