It's a tough choice imho, practicality vs. having our heads explode from having to decide between the typically-stratospheric quality of the entries... how about if we go to 2 votes for a while and see how that works? It seems to me that we've been doing three for some time and only rarely had ties, we've just had a run of them lately...

I'd also like to propose people vote for the avatars and not the posters. I'm not specifically referring to this individual contest btw, but its obvious from observing the voting over time it goes on.
It's not meant to be a popularity contest

Works for me. Take it away! Obviously, I'm not getting into the Nixonian spirit of my avatar but I blame Hypno-Toad for that.

My solution is to let people have more votes - why not let people vote for, say, five? Shouldn't more votes mean lower odds of a tie?
