Vote For Your Favorite Trek Composer

A good bad influence

Okay, I love Star Trek. I also love the music of Star Trek. And I like polls. So here's yet another one: Vote for your favorite Trek composer. You may choose three.

(Thank you startreksoundtracks.com.)

For me it's:

Gerald Fried (Genius!)
James Horner (Star Trek II. Do I have to say more?)
Ron Jones (The Gerald Fried of TNG. ;))

Oooh, tough choices!

Hmm. Damn... uh... I guess I'd tenatively pick:

1) Jerry Goldsmith (obviously).
2) Sol Kaplan (love his instrumentals).
3) Cliff Eidelmann (teetering between him and Chattaway.)

Giacchino has yet to prove himself, though I hope for great things.

I almost went with Diane Warren, but in the end I chose Jerry Goldsmith. Not only did he do TMP/TNG, VOY and First Contact, but his non Trek stuff puts him at just about the top of every other list as well. My second choice would be James Horner because the Star Trek II theme is my favorite. Plus he generaly spends a lot of time hanging out with Goldsmith on those other lists too.

Had to go with Horner. The STII score was amazing, and there was enough different for III to make it worthwhile, too.

Fred Steiner
Jerry Goldsmith
Ron Jones

Not to downplay the great music composed by others on the list, but these three each did the best music of the respective series they worked on (TOS, the movies, TNG), setting the tone and style that is best remembered and emulated.
