I would've voted for both Night of the Living Deads and Both Dawn of the Deads, but, I saw "Vote for more than one" after I voted. Assuming I had to narrow it down to 1, I went with 1990 NotLD

What about Return of the Living Dead?

Somewhere a naked punk zombie is crying . . . . .

Dawn of the Dead (1978) is the greatest zombie film ever, and the original Romero trilogy is in a class of its' own in relation to other zombie films.

I've never understood the appeal of the original "Dawn." It has a good story, but the zombies look incredibly bad...almost comically so. Some were actually blue. I found the bad makeup work to be a huge distraction.

Oops I only voted for one.

Dawn 78 for me, though I have to concede that the 04 remake is one of the better remakes out there. The big difference is that Dawn 78 is about something beyond zombies, plus the 04 has a crappy ending and some odd editing.

I think the look mostly works. If anything it's uneven, with some zombies looking good and a lot looking like they were rushed through makeup. The Steven Zombie at the end is one of the greats however. If we are talking production though overall it's very impressive. The location shooting at the mall is amazing and the goblin soundtrack works well with the film. The scope is so much larger than most zombie films.

I think the film offers a lot. The fantasy of having a mall to yourself, the clever social commentary (which isn't forced like in some of the later Romero films) The great action setpieces and gore, and a great set of characters (maybe not as great as the Night characters, but close). It's also really funny (The scene with the rednecks for example). I think Night of the Living Dead is it's equal, but I prefer the fun roller coaster ride of Dawn.

I liked both the original and remade versions of Dawn of the Dead. The idea of being stuck in a shopping mall is interesting. The 1978 movie also indirectly implied that excessive consumerism makes you a living zombie as well.

The land of the dead was also social political in content as it showcased the gap between the rich and the poor and the zombies eventually kill most of the rich folks.

Yes that is true. That is why i did not include zombie movies like The House of the Dead, The Return of the Living Dead and Shaun of the Dead. I only included zombies movies that George A. Romero was involved in either as a Director or as a Writer.

Both versions of Dawn - but I'd really rank my faves as

Dawn Of The Dead (78)
Return Of The Living Dead
Shaun Of The Dead
Dawn Of The Dead (remake)

I believe the intent of the OP was to poll film in the Romero universe only.

Obviously.

But Shaun of the Dead has "of the dead" in the title and thus myself and it seems a few others thought of that title over the others.
