Are there any other fans of the improvised comedy podcast "Hello From the Magic Tavern" out there on this forum?

I was just listening to a recent episode of the podcast (season 3; episode 53) and just realized that Tawny Newsome (Beckett Mariner from Lower Decks) plays Activia Barleyfoot on the podcast. Activia is a recurring guest character who has been in at least five episodes over the past several years.

But even though I've been listening for several years, I guess that since I didn't know of Tawny Newsome until before Lower Decks and the Netflix series Space Force I never put it together that she was also on Magic Tavern until her most recent appearance on the podcast.

It's a great show (IMHO, but your mileage may vary) that has been consistently funny for 5 years now, which is remarkable since it is all improvised/unscripted.

And Tawny Newsome's portrayal of Activia has been one of my favorite recurring guests.

To me, the voice cast is merely competent in that they seem capable of giving you what’s on the page, but so far, not much else.

You compare the LD voice cast with Rick and Morty’s and the difference is huge. Each actor in R&M with voice alone is able to imbue their characters with a distinct and unique personality beyond what is in the script.

Same with the voice cast of Harley Quinn. Those actors bring the funny to the characters beyond what is on the written page. So far, IMO, LD’s cast has not been able to do that.

Boimler is kind of nerdy and nervous, and the actor is able bring that forth, but making Boimler funny in his own right, so far, seems beyond the actor’s reach. The actor playing Mariner is the same. She is able to get the frenetic nature of the character across, but without that little extra that would make her seem like a unique individual. I think that also limits the actor’s ability to make the character funny in her own right.

None of the rest of the characters seem to be anything more than pedestrian. So far it seems to me these actors need sharper, more clever, and incisive writing in order for the characters to actually be funny.
