The Gagarin is my favorite Discovery ship so far. A real blend of classic TOS style with a modern touch.
...I hope we see more of its class in the seasons to come, since it was blown up.

However, I think DSC has used more of its special effects budget on other stuff
Could they load up the scene with A LOT more ships, etc?
I've really enjoyed Discovery's establishing shots of the ship and space backgrounds, I think they're beautiful and often very eye catching.
It also doesn't help that we are seeing this in HD (1080p) resolution only. If/when 4K blu-rays and/or 4k streaming with HDR comes out we'll be able to see much more detail in each scene and appreciate it more.
There are no fully-lit hulls from some unseen, ever present white-light source in the middle of deep space. The ships either light themselves from spots or are lit by a nearby star or planet.
I like the visuals. Space is actually dark in them unless they are near a star.
I will say, one starship shot I thought Discovery NAILED was this close up of the Gagarin. It looks very real and natural.

I agree nicely shot, plus the design of the ship works for me as well.
Does anyone else miss the standard ship fly by shots?
DISC special effects should look better than ENTERPRISE special effects, but worse than TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY effects for consistency reasons.
No because I get that and all my other 90's Trek itches scratched by The Orville.Does anyone else miss the standard ship fly by shots?

Which I assume is industry standard, you wouldn't have the most detailed version used in shots where wouldn't be able to see that kind of detail.
Yep, LOD or Level Of Detail in industry parlance.According to the Devs over at Star Trek Online, there are Several models of the Discovery used for different kinds of shots, close ups, far away, certain angles.
What is the actual problem: too many poly's, not enough on certain surfaces? too much/too poor surface detail? Some rendering variables set incorrectly?
